I am starting a Jetbike-heavy Eldar army, and had an idea to paint and base the Jetbikes to make it look like they were zooming at an incredible pace. I would sort of streak the paint horizontally to create the illusion of linear movement, and lean the bushes/scrub on the base to create the same effect. Has anyone tried this before? Would it work?

Catch me if you can.

Sounds like a good idea to me! I would suggest just going for it and make a test base. And post some WIPs!

Will do! (When I get the money to get the models... haha)

ooo, and you could lean the mounting stck forward as well to give it a little more sense of movement. You can just start by working on an extra 25mm base (if you have one) and just draw on a rectangle of paper as a place holder (or a 'counts as' figure! )

I think there are ways of making the model appear as though it's in motion that don't rely on 'blurring' the paint that will be much more effective. It's largely to do with positioning and reference points on the base.

The problem I see with this idea is that while you might blur the paint, the model itself will still be clearly in focus to the viewer upon inspection, which will end up looking just like sloppy paint work.

Hmmm... that's a pretty good point. I'll chew it over for a bit before I commit.

yeh, do a test model, it's worth a try, but I too worry that the result may look more like smeared paint than fast movement

and only "blurring" the base should be all that's needed

and show him hitting a poor imperial guardsman and just slicing right through him. nothing says speed like trauma! Well, maybe that's not such a good idea.

Bluring on the actual model is possible, but it's really tough to pull off. The one time I've seen it done nicely is via sculpting:

These Rackham Equanime models are more in the vein of phasing in and out of reality, but they do have blur effects in places too.

Just something to chew on.

Now there's a Champion of Tzeentch if I ever did see one, too bad its not tournament legal.

I don't see any blurring in those pics at all. I see some contrasting hues that are blended spectacularly, but no blurred paint. Also, in my opinion, I get no sense of movement from those models whatsoever.

The issusion of movement to the eye is SOLELY based upon background. Ever been sitting in a car and looked out the window at a telephone pole (that you KNOW is not moving) and another car slowly passes? You get the weird sensation that YOU are moving?

Create your illusion of movement on the base, in my opinion. Bushes and tall grass bent over as it ZOOOMS by, an open book on the ground with a few pages yanked out and whipping across the ground underneath the bike, etc.

Imagination will get you where you need to go.

If you're planning on sculpting or bulking the bases with Filler or Green Stuff, then drag it out in long lines, along the plane of motion.

But I guess that would be like ZOOM Zoom, as opposed to Zoom.

I took the idea of tanks commonly have vertical oil/rust/dirt lines dripping off mechanical parts, joints or rivits and made them more horizontal on my DE Jetbikes. That in addition to mounting the bikes with a little pitch/yaw do make it seem like the bikes are, or frequently are moving quickly. I think they turned out pretty good; I'll try to get photos for you.

I'm pretty sure the Eldar don't get their bikes from Mazda...I have a feeling that the Eldar have no patience whatsoever for annyoing commercials.

I saw some cool dirt/chipping effects on a Tau tank or pirrana around here a while back. Essentially little streaks going from the front edges of the nose and tail wings that really gave the illusion of movement, or at least the feeling that the thing normally goes really fast, enough so that it hits small birds and they smear in streaks... might be worth looking up.
