I been thinking that the Scything Talon Flygrant might be better then the Dakka Flygrant in 5th edition because he gets more attacks against vehicles and you have a good shot of destroying a vehicle with 6 attacks on the charge at str 6+2d6. He also makes a good character killer and you can give him Warpblast instead of Warpfield to shoot a str10 shot at vehicles or a template at infantry but you lose the 2+ save and Warpblast is only at BS3 so this might not be worth it since he will be taking a lot of fire. He does decently well at killing terminators with his high initiative as well.

The Dakka flyrant is very effective against troops with its 12 twinlinked living ammo shots but less so against vehicles in 5th. You do have dakka fexes for shredding troops but they are slower then the dakka flygrant who can possibly eliminate a big threat first turn.

I would stick with the Dakka flyrant. His firepower is sorely needed in any tyranid army. He can still kill vehicles.

I prefer my talon flyrant because he looks better. Those huge wings go better with talons than bioguns.

However the 12 shot variant is superior on paper and in effect. you see if you want to kill vehicles you can do so by assaulting with the flyrants basic 3 attacks plus 1 for charge. you are going to kill a vehicle with that easy, you dont need the extra two attacks. against horde there is no comparison, after all you can shoot then charge in.

On pure effect you want devourers every time. I just like them with talons.

Talons do look cooler.

Implant attack is a nice surprise for a Flyrant with Dev's.

I say its up to your playing style and the army style.

I gotta go against the majority I think. A CC Tyrant is one of the few ways you are going to successfully deal with AV14. Carnifexes are too slow to reliably get up close with a tank, the Flyrant has the manoeverability required...

I don't run flyrants. Easily killed IMO.

Dakka is the best way to run them, unless you are running a flying warrior cadre army then I'd run with the scything talons since you are going to be "in the :bleep" with them on turn 2 and he's very scary then with 27 flying warrior bots zooming along giving him a hand.

It's harder to hide something as big as a flying tyrant in 5th ed, so trying to outshoot the enemy at 18" is likely to get you killed. On the other hand, if you choose your target properly you should be fairly safe in combat.

Also, while the dakka flyrant might produce more kills statistically, melee kills are more important than shooting kills. They determine if you win or lose the combat, and how much of morale modifier the other guy suffers. I'd much rather kill 3 guys straight up in melee than 3 in shooting and 2 in melee.

Lastly, if you find you're getting a lot of value out of your dakka dakka, then why not take a walking tyrant with guard? It's a lot cheaper, and does the dakka dakka flyrant really benefit from the extra mobility? In my experience I've found not, though I know plenty of other folk would disagree.

well its how you put it, devs and scything talons is not too bad with a flyrant. if you give a flyrant 2 ccs its gona be a fire magnet. its true you cant count on fexes to get into cc with a tank, but at the same time you cant always count on a flyrant getting into cc.(unless ofcourse your running what stelek said in his post)

devs are an all around vehicle stunner, troop kill whilst the tyrant is not in cc yet.

Tyranids don't need to "deal" with AV14 vehicles, the most common of which being Lemun Russ, and Land Raider variants. They just need to stun them over and over again while killing the rest of the opponent's army. Gunfex configurations do that perfectly well. Besides, when they are stunned, your MC's can get up there to take it out anyway; especially the Russ, which has wussy rear armor.
