Hi Guys, I've a concept in my mind for painting my pair of lictors, which is to try and reflect their Camaelioline nature in the paint scheme.
The idea is to paint the lower area of the model, in a style that looks just like the base - which is basic urban, some ruins and sand highlighted from a dark grey with skull white highlights at the very tips. Then I want to transition up into the upper areas and paint those like the rest of my army - A hive fleet Kraken type scheme - red Chittin and white/bone coloured limbs and underbelly - I'll post a gaunt picture when I get home so you can see better.
What I'm unable to come up with an idea for is how to transition from the camouflage to the regular paint screen. I don't want to just stop it at the waist or some other abitrary point on the model because I think it will suck... So how do I get from greys/whites to Bone + Red???
Answers on an electron to....

Fantastic model.
Anyone know where that's from?

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

I think it's a GD entry, if I recall correctly.

Those are some cool ideas, but I'm stil not sure how i'm going to tie it into my army colour scheme. I could cheat I suppose and put some ruins on the base that kinda match the rest of the army.

Do not put ruins on the base that match the rest of the army. It will spoil the effect that you are going for.
How to:
-first paint up both the top and bottom of the model in their own paint schemes. have it end abruptly, so that you can blend them afterwards.
Then, there are a few ways to blend the two together.
1- You can mix the two base colors together. Take your base red and grey colors (before inking and highlighting) and mix the two together. Start with one color as very dominant, then mix in more of the other one as you layer your colors towards finishing fully with the second color.
highlight up normally after you are satisfied with the transition.
2- You can throw translucent layers over your color. Mix a little more water than you normally would with your base red and glaze it over the grey at the transition area. After that dries, mix even more water and do it again, only move just a little farther down. Keep doing this until you are satisfied with the blending.
You may want to highlight up a little after you are satisfied with the transition.
3- You can Wet blend the two colors. Take your core colors, and put them both onto the transition area, on opposite sides. Mix them together on the mini.
This can give you a very smooth transition. Afterwards, highlighting should work out fine.
-After you have your transitions highlighted, if you still find problems, mix a dark ink with lots of water and apply it over most or all of the model. This helps tie the mini together, such that the transitions seem less abrupt.

I've wondered about adding some sort of cameleon spots/lumps/scales to a Lictor carapace, so that they would change colour rather than the entire skin (which somehow seems unlikely for an armoured creature, but that's just my opinion)

I think that one is featured in the back of the 'Nid book, it should say who did it.

Yep, it is from the back of the Tyranid Codex, modeled and painted by Victoria Lamb, an incredibly talented Australian hobbyist.
That piece is loaded with palpable fear.
