sounds stupid, but could be amusing to play, but putting together and painting the models could be a pain.

Yeah, you need a Clanrat unit for every multiple of other units. Yes, it would be amusing to play, but they'd still have average Ld and basically only have outnumbering in their adavantage. More frontage means they can be attackd by more enemies at once, meaning you just rout the blocks one at a time, hopefull causing all nearby to do the same.

Clanrats, however, ignore Slave panic. That's the point. Units of 20 Clanrats, Units of 36 Slaves. You never need more than 40 slaves, and rat swarms are better in certain situations. They don't fall back, for a start, and can have poison attacks. 5 Attacks and wounds per base - more expensive than slaves for the wounds, but comparable fighters with higher movement that doesn't run away.

My skaven army made me so sick of brown. If I had to paint a thousand of them I would die. The models, assuming you bought fifty boxed Clanrat sets from GW, would cost $2500AU - down to $2000 anywhere else.

Now it's up to you to tell us if YOU think THAT's over the top. Haven't even started on how much paint you'd need. My inlaws run a paint factory though, so if you want to hit up a deal...

Clanrats have to > slaves. Such wide frontage is going to get you run off the board by turn 2-3 you probably won't win any combats. Good luck trying to assemble much less paint this many models :p.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

just remembered the mainstay unit rule :(
kinda spoils the fun, still want to include a unit of 100 slaves for shock factor.

and arctik, price isnt important, ill just buy 200 per week and it shouldnt take long to paint them to a gaming standard, ill modify the list and re-shape it a bit.

The thing with huge units are that they suffer horrendously from diminishing returns. Ie, the 25 first models or so add a lot to the unti (rank bonus, outnumber, command) but the remaining 75 are just cannon fodder. They don't improve the unit at all.
You'll get a very wide, relatively costly (for slaves) unit with the same combat potential as a unit of 30 slaves. If you get charged by something that can beat a unit of 30 slaves on the charge (not very unlikely), you've got 100 slaves being trampled to death in a few moments. Which, for this list, sets off a chain reaction of panic tests as well.

Huge units work best with stubborn, ITP or most preferably Unbreakable units, the Phoenix Guard being a good example.

i know crawler, idea being for the large unit to just take a beating, 200 points is nothing for holding up a few units, and maybe even beating one every few games.

not only that, but hopefully people see the unit and think its a threat, i rather take a few turns of shooting on them than losing my assassins or stormvermin.

You would win every game because as you slowly pulled each and every model out of your case and carefully put them into their movement trays your oponents would die of old age.

Entertaining though.

ok, this is turning into a bit of a challenge now
ill start ordering some clanrats boxes, get around 100 and start painting, once those are done ill do another 100, and so on untill i reach 1,000.
could be the most boring thing ive ever done XD
but would make a great pic of a single ranked up unit of 1,000 slaves.

Nope, they still suck. Nobody in their right mind will shoot at a unit of 100 slaves. It may take up space, but when your unit get's feared, terrorized, auto-panicked etc, etc, or simply frontal charged by something mean, and runs, there's a huge gap in your line. The enemy pours in, and have direct access to your backfield with magic/shooting, and the rest of your army's flanks.

And that's if you got a sensible army in addition. The list with just tons of slaves (while also being illegal) is going to fail utterly and miserably if someone ever bothers to bring it to the table.

Now, if you want your 1000 slaves picture;

1. Paint 25 slaves.
2. Buy Photoshop, and learn how to use it.
3. Duplicate the pic 40 times.
4. ????
5. PROFIT!

It'll not only be much cheaper, but you won't have to waste hundreds of hours of your life on something as pointless as 1000 slaves....

hive, i dont think you have any idea what im getting at atall.
wheres the challenge in using photoshop? and i can use that anyway.
it would be an amusing challenge to paint up 1,000 slaves, and since its against all your ideas, ill use it in a 4,000 point game as 1 unit

oh, and its for looks, not really for use on the table.

id paint them on the sprues. Spray black, get some brown spray, then pick out details once assembled.
And get yourself some regimental bases (the long ones that fit like 5 models) for convenience.

Good luck, and may you not get bored

lol, they wont be for sale

ill mainly ink and drybrush them from a white base, should make it easier, and since they have no shields then you can get to most of the model to paint it, im just thinking spray white, spray brown ink, then do things like skin and weps.

No. Wrong. Unless you've got an unlimited cash-supply and a team of enslaved painters.
Why does the image of a kid eating bugs for attention pop into mind?...

Let's be honest. You won't make a thousand slaves. Say what you want, but in the end, you won't do it.

If, against all common sense, you still did, then congratulations. You've managed to waste some hundred-odd hours of your life and ~2000$, impressive. If you're going to show your determination to the hobby or whatever it is your challenging yourself with; atleast do something useful, like, make a very themed army that you actually have a chance of completing before dying of boredom. Maybe it can even be fielded into battle without a suicide note written on it's Battle Standard!

Atleast I've wasted enough time posting here.

However, good luck. May your knives never falter when facing ~10.000 mould lines...

I've often thought of the usefulness of 7x6 blocks of slaves if you're using a grey seer. You know, give them spears and death frenzy them and you have 28 WS 2 S 3 attacks in close combat for 3 pts a model. In addition, they won't break on their way across the table due to frenzy. Next turn cast it on them again and they go up to 42 attacks a turn, and who cares if you're losing d3 models a turn? you've got 42 of the lil buggers in the unit and you're only losing d3x3 pts a turn as a result of turning your army's most under appreciated unit into a major close combat menace.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

That's actually quite true... in a game with 2 lord choices you could go for two seers and a pile of slaves + skyre weapons and ratling/warpfire guns attached to the necessary Clanrat units.

London (work) / Pompey (live, from time to time)

just min sized clanrat units with a rattling gun (dont like warpfire throwers) and a massive unit of slaves to shield them (but not block sight)

then 2 or 3 units of 5 jezzails, maybe 7 in a higher points game.
need a warp lighting cannon, and a doomwheel should be fun.

as for lord the 1st will be a grey seer.
the 2nd will be the vermin lord since its too strong to pass up, if the game doesent permit me to use a vermin lord then its another grey seer.
and since the vermin lord is a lvl 4 aswell i wont lose any magic strength, and ill gain alot of combat strength.

Would a unit of 100 slaves fit on your table? Let alone 10 of them

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak.
