ok, now i really dont like the way GW paints ultramarines, but i like the way this guy does it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plZiGqcgDv0
one problem, he says that i should NOT prime my plastic modles. He says only to prime my medal ones. This guys blood angles look great, but i thought you should ALWAYS prime your models, take a look at his account and tell me if he's pro or not. (obviosly, im not pro, this is going to be my first army)

lol, mate, do you read WD?
one of the eavy metal team didnt prime his models for 7 years
its just to keep the paint lasting longer, and obviously you cant ink a model without it.
i do it alot, usually down to running out of spray.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor. |

Well, I think he Blood Angel looks much better than the ultra marine, but as he said... that was for a quick tabletop army. I don't think it's completely necessary to prime if you're using a foundation paint.

i've used found paint straight onto metal & resin due to impatience and so far so good.
however with plastic you should definately wash them first if you're not going to undercoat.
apart from the egs above i've always undercoated and found this caused no probs unless the weather or the can was if (resulting in a powdery finish that can rub off).
my 2 faves are grey & black. the grey would be a great base for the blues and i'm about to start a tzeenchian deamon prince starting with a grey primer.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

If it's something like a basic line troop with a dark foundation color I've never really seen the point to using primer. I also didn't like the Ultramarines color scheme, so for my Ultrawing army from 3rd Ed, I subbed in Enchanted Blue as the last color instead of Ultramarine blue, though I used black as my foundation to save time on doing the details in it later.

I think using a black primer helps for just that reason (aside from laying down a good base for the paint): saving time later down the road on details/shading/etc.
I don't know if I'm just being too picky, but I wouldn't paint anything without a primer coat first!

I don't think you're being picky. I just won't use black spray primer. I'd rather paint a black base coat on by hand for each model than use the spray. Every brand of black spray primer I've used sucks.

I wish I could find it. Not too big a deal though, for metal I use white/gray anyway, and for plastic, while I don't need the black foundation coat, it was easy enough to take a tank brush and do a lot of models with it at once.
