Do these count as units for kill point purposes?

stupid as it is- The answer by the rulebook is yes.
With freinds- make the clarification before the game, and the answer is no.

I word the question "Do you want to consider the Spore Mines as a unit?"

If yes, then they are worth a KP, but are then also able to Run, and contest objectives.

If No, then no KP, no run, no contesting.

I prefer the latter, but don't care either way, as long as it is consistent.

Every model in the game is part of a unit (or is a one-model unit) and Spore Mine clusters are no exception.

More importantly, why are you using spore mine clusters?

What about Spore Mines from a Biovore. I had to stop using Meiotic Spore Mines and Biovores as my opponents started racking up too many KP's from them. It should be ratified.

Not bashing you guys, as you are right in RAW but...

This is nuts.

No way should they count. They are meant to blow up. I don't play nids, I play against them a lot, and I would just never count them.

Same with removed gun drones. I just can't see it.

Playing this one as RAW is just going to heighten the anti-KP backlash even further. There is no reason in the world that we can't discuss a list of sensible KP exclusions. Anybody got any others?

Technically, not only do the Spore Mines fired by Biovores _NOT_ count as points, they are part of the Biovores' Brood, and so need to be entirely wiped out to get points from them. And by the same words, even the Spore Mines can contest - that is not listed in "Mindless".

Biovores bring the ones they fire with them, and it is all one brood, mentioned in both the Spore Mine rules and the Biovore rules.
Spore Mines in their own brood, fielded alone - yea, stinks in KP.

I agree.

I should have worded the first sentence..."When I bring this topic up with my opponent before the game, I ask..."

They are a unit, but I don't think they should be; or at least should have additional special rules.
But if they are a unit, that means they can contest objectives, and can Run. So I just present them as a package deal....

Technically, not only do the Spore Mines fired by Biovores _NOT_ count as points, they are part of the Biovores' Brood,
That isnt' exactly true. When the biovore misses, the mines are placed, there is nothing to indicate that they are in the same unit. They move differently, don't deal with coherency, don't count towards 25% shooting casualties, etc.

OTOH, the mines don't exist as a separate unit until the biovore misses. So even if you are playing by RAW, I would not count biovore hits as a KP

Check Ork rules for other example of models on the table that do not count. Or the Land mine launching tanks - whatever they are, I play Nids.

Read the Biovores entry and the referenced Spore Mine rules - as opposed to the Spore Mine FoC entry.

Missed shots involved placing models to show where the "miss" exists - because it matters. This did not involve placing a Unit or a Brood. Placing models on the table is not the same as placing units - rarely, but explicitly true.

shrug

editing to add that I basically use my Biovores/Spore Mines in Apoc games only now, or very rare planned matches. This is only a very small hit to their utility - Reagardless of the VP from fired/Non-DS mines.

Actually stray spore mines from biowores doesnt exist in another unit, but is a separate unit on its own. And by pure RAW are worth a KP.
