Virtually all my gaming buddies are re-enactors, which got me wondering how many dakkaites are into this. If so, what groups are you with? What period do you re-enact? Where are you based? etc.

For myself I'm a member of the 'Knights Hospitaller Association', who recreate a Knights Hospitaller camp circa 1250. Also the newly formed 'Company of the English Langue' representing those Knights Hospitaller who fought in the War of the Roses (1455-1487). Both groups (with their obvious overlapping membership) are based in Sheffield, UK.

If you attend any UK re-enactments, look for the red banner with a big white cross on it and come and say hello!

P.S. The SCA is NOT a re-enactment group! Dressing in a mish-mash of gear over a 500 year period and then strapping plate steel over hockey armour before hitting each other with pipe lagging and bamboo may be great fun.
Re-enactment, it aint!

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I was part of Regia Anglorum (Norse, Saxon and Norman) back int he 90's; before it became a clique, and a business, and lost its edge.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

This sounds more like LARPing than the SCA I'm familiar with(several friends are SCA members). It may just be the SCA groups in Louisiana are a bit more serious about it, though.

I was in the SCA in college. Honestly the only reason I did it was because of the hot chicks that were into it and those dresses that made their boobies stick out.

They made me go to dance practice once, and then I was done. I'm just not the frolicking type...

Where I'm from in South Yorkshire was where most of the southern states had their weapons manufactured, so we've got loads of ACW re-enactors!

If you get the chance, give it a go for a weekend. I've not done ACW, but I have done volley fire with a Napoleonic unit - very cool experience

I go to a battle every year and watch, the battle of Aiken, and have always enjoyed the sweet smell of black powder rifles and the large plums of smoke. The only problem is the start up cost here is a rough estimate.
whole uniform, anywhere from 120 to 300 dollars depending which side and trype of uniform
rifle, 250 to 600 dollars once again depending on what type you want.
bayonet, canteen, tent etc 200 dollar+. A little harsh on the pocket book but in time when my wife is done with school ill probaly give it a go.

I love the smell of kordite in the morning!!! Smells like...victory

Yeah, sounds about the same price as over here. Big groups have usually got spare gear, though, so that noobs can try before they spend a load of cash.

You can make it cheaper, too if you either know a good seamstress or can drop on second hand stuff (there's tons of it out there - just NEVER buy re-enactment gear off eBay! )
