So, due to a confluence of events, I may be in a position in the not-to-distant future where I'll have a greater opportunity to play WHFB than WH40k. Consequently, I'm looking at getting back into Fantasy and I'm looking for some input on what the solid armies are these days. I started playing WHFB back in 5th Ed and played a wide variety of armies between 5th and 6th editions. Here's what I played, and my thoughts on my likes and dislike of them:
- Chaos - back before it got split up into various books, this was my first army. Very tough, generally pretty slow, but hard hitting. I missed the ranged attacks, but the magic was good.
- Bretonnians - my second army - very fast and hard hitting with good maneuverability. I missed having war machines.
- Skaven - my third and favorite army - I played Skaven for the longest among all my armies, loving the Plague Monks, Poison Wind Globadiers, Warpfire Throwers, and Jezzails. I quit playing shortly after the most recent army book came out, so never got to try all the "broken" toys in it.
- Dwarfs - I'd occasionally borrow a Dwarf army to play - too defensive for my tastes, nice war machines, though.
- Empire - Another borrowed army - aside from the war machines - yawn.
- Lizardmen - A solid army - tough little buggers that were cheap and maneuverable - never got to try the latest army book for them, though.
- O&G - Fun, but way too random. Not to mention all the frickin' goblins to paint - I'd had enough of that with Skaven.
So, here's my question - how have these things changed with the new rules and army books?
I'd love to start a Skaven army again, but with my time being limited, I want to go with fairly low model count army and frankly, the easier it is to paint, the better. Consequently, I'm leaning toward another Chaos army. I love the Chaos Warrior plastics and I know how easy they can be to paint and have look decent, but what's their list like these days? Is the get-you-by list any good? When does the new Warriors of Chaos book come out? What recommendations can folks make for me?
Thanks!
