It is easy to see that JSJ is a bit less effective in 5th edition, considering that trees just provide cover saves instead of blocking LOS completely. This extremely reduces the effectiveness of the tau suites. How have you guys compensated for this?

It doesn't feel less effective. If anything it is kind of better now. They can just keep jumping back while you try to run through cover. They can still shoot you and if you try to shoot them they are getting cover even if your in range.

You can still JSJ in/out of range of your opponent's guns. Or do it to deny the enemy unit cover, while still having it yourself. And then there's bound to be something that blocks LoS.

Place your Hammerhead on the table, behind a hill.
Yes, they can see your Hammerhead.
Now move your suits to the side of the hammerhead, out in the open. Fire.
Jump back, behind the hammerhead.
Gee, no one can see your suits.
Win.

Yeah but the lascannons are now shooting at your Hammerhead. Truth is, the crisis suits can be shot at more now in 5th edition. Of course now my Crisis suits can be a target and maybe draw fire away from my hammerheads & broadsides.

yeah, but the las cannon ALWAYS shot the hammer head, now the hammer head gets a 4 up cover save so he is far more likely to survive.
its better than before, just less places to hide the crises units.

what were the lascannon shooting at before? your kroot perhaps?
Hammerheads get much much better with distruption pods. it takes a lot of dedicated fire to bring one down, let alone multiples (which you should be bringing). hide your suits behind them.
although JSJ takes a bit of a hit, be able to be shot at with a FREE 4+ cover save is better than haivng a fast CC nasty hiding behind area terrain then killing you in assault. plus you need never say for shield gens anymore.
tau get better in 5th

I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live? |

It all depends on your terrain building. 40K should have a fairly terrain heavy surface, with clear paths for vehicles. Urban is ideal.
Every terrain board should have some sort of area and linear blocking terrain, some sort of entangling terrain without cover and area terrain that gives cover saves. Three out of four of the above minimum.
To get the best out of the game tactically you need not only terrain but varied types of terrain. A lake is not equal to a hill or a ruined building. A toxic chemical lake is different once again.

JSJ did take a hit in 5th. There are ways around it that people have mentioned, but the best way to try and mitigate it is by adding drones to the crisis units. I used to run my suits without drones, relying on blocking cover to keep them safe. With that kind of cover greatly reduced, I have started to use drones and the 4+ cover save gained by most terrain to keep my suits in action longer. This means more points into the suit units and consentrated fire can still take them out, but it does increase their survivability. Hope this helps.

Meh, use your tanks as your JSJ base and you should be fine.
Actually, now that the tanks block LOS, you could use them as Mobile JSJ bunkers as they move along with you. It's pretty decent for a few units of Suits to do that kind of work.
