Okay,

Currently
80 Junior Officer with 4 Plasma Gunners

Considering

76 Junior Officer with 3 Plasma Gunners and 1 Flamer

pro's and cons.

pro's. ability to hit horde and low save armies more efficiently. volume of hits should increase when within range. (against IG,eldar, tau, nids and orks having flamers can mean the difference between success or failure)

Con's: not as hard hitting as the 4 plasma gunners. these squads were designed to be anti-terminator/destroyer killer and also allow some anti vehicle capablity when in dire need. (nothing is worse then failing to wipe out all 5 destroyers allowing them WBB rolls)

I could potentially offset the loss the plasma gunner on a couple of the squads by buying a plasma pistol for the JO. but i cant afford it for all of them.

any ideas opinons etc..

I have never tried that set up, but i have always found its best to stick with like equiped squads, all flamers, all plasma or all meltas.

try it out and see how it runs, although I think you will be best with the traditional set up.

Yeah thats my position as well normally.. but the flamers seem like they might be worth it especialy for last minute drop and grab objective situations.

of course against termies and other heavy troops i will miss the 1 plasma hit most of the time.

hrmm just is a difficult choice.

*bump*

any other thoughts or opinons? i was think 3 squads 3 plasma guns with flamer.. and 2 with 3 plasma gun flamer and plasma pistol JO

do you think that would detract from their purpose or not?

I myself have been thinking about adding in a flamer for the vet squad. Though if you think about it, you will really get eaked off if for some reason you fail to finish the target. So the question is do you take everything to complete the task and or try to gimp it so that you can multi role.

Im for the complete the task and have keep the three melta guns.

thank you for the opinion.. that is my concern as well.. 8 vs 7 or 6 plasma shots means i am less likely to knock out a 5 man destroyer squad that i need to kill off.

Ig don't do suicide command squads in 5th anymore. 2kp a squad make it too stiff of a price to pay. Stick with vet squads, and keep all of the guns the same.

And how do you propose to tackle tanks? Lascannons don't do nearly the job they used to.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Three deep striking suicide vet squads, all loaded up with melta guns. That should take care of 90% of the armies out there. A few melta's in a reminant or two will keep any land raider's honest, and lets be real. Your squads should still be packed with heavy weapons. Lascannons are almost as effective vs land raiders out in the open as they were in 4th, and if they are comming at you like they normally do, than you will be shooting them out in the open. Also, buy demolishers. vs land raiders and monoliths, the only better gun in the game to taget these guys is the rail gun.

IG do fine with suicide command platoons. In kill point missions you go for tabling the enemy. You can drop so much shooting into one area of the map to clear out the enemy and go to ground with cover if your opponent returns fire. One lascannon costs as much as 2.5 meltaguns in a command squad and is far, far less effective. You're much better served by taking melta or flamer command suicide squads than by heavy weapons.

I played an Annihilation scenario versus Necrons yesterday. My 17 kill points versus his 11. Advantage him, right? I phased him out on Turn 4, something that would have been impossible without several suicide platoons toting plasma and melta.

OC FTW

I actually don't run suicide command squads anymore because of the KP thing. I only run 2 platoons of dudes for the same reason and i like to give the platoon commands nothing but a LC and park em in the back to keep them a bit more safe. Your suicide squads should be minimum sized melta gunning vet squads. Alot of the time they don't even end up being suicidal because they are so small.
Dumb people who don't shoot 3 melta guns >.<

If you drop 4 meltas behind a tank its gonna die, plus you can the use the wrekage as cover!

4 flamers can cause a lot of hurt for horde armies. If you can hit a squad with enough firey death then it could fail a moral check and then you use it for cover.

4 Plasmas is bad tho cause you are going to lose a guy or 2 because of overheating.

I prefer to load up "suicide" command squads in a chimera. Use the exra weapons to finish off a squad, the hull to block some shots at least and then you can move off and hit something else after. And once you have done this once your opponent is going to fire everything at the chimera leaving your guardsmen free to capture objectives and your other tanks free to fire. The shock factor can be worth it at times.

"...with 3 Plasma Gunners and 1 Flamer "

i don't like mixing special weapons like that.
they both have a different roles or targets.
