I'm painting a battle damaged Marine and I'm stumped. what colour should I paint the armour where its been damaged? At first I was just going to paint bits of silver on it but its not made of metal so that would be wrong. The main colours I'm using are orange tiger stripes over black (see picture to the left...)
Cheers, Mick

GW advocates the metallics. But if you're strongly against it, maybe a grey is muted enough to stand against your strong scheme.

Grey death is right, I think. Use a medium grey for the damaged areas, and use a small amount of a transparent white to line along the bottom edge of the chipped paint. This will give the damage a little depth and not look like it is as painted on. Make sure that the transparent line is really faint as a harsh white line underneath your damage is not what you want!

Not my picture, but you can try like this:

It's basically a scratch painted black, and then the middle of the scratch painted medium brown, with a little light brown in the middle of the larger scratches, leaving a black border around the outside, and then the bottom of the scratch painted in a lighter colour of what the scratch is on.
