I'm starting an Ork army on my birthday (in October), when I'll be getting the Battle for Black Reach set and a small Ork army set. I am wondering how to configure my army. The blackshirts at the FLG have suggested the following;

Shooty: Get as many gunz as I can and point them at the enemy. Have Big Shootas in all possible squads and take SAG Meks and lots of Lootas.
Horde CC: Get as many choppas as I can and HIT the enemy with them. Use lots of Kans/Deff dreads mixed with my elite squads. Take a pimped warboss or Ghazghull.
Mekanized: Lots of Trukks on my Boyz squads and lots of Bikers. Elite squads can go in battlewagons.

Any other suggestions?

True Orky Tech:everything that is random like warpheads, looted wagons and sag meks and squads that have varied results
and the iron wall: 9 kans, 2 big meks and 2 deff dreads with da boyz behind da metal kanz

Also: Battlewagon bash - 3 mobs of 20 boyz in battlewagons (with deffrollas of course) plus as many nobz mobs with battlewagons as you can afford.

Bikers: Wazzdakka plus bikers.

Really though, the ork codex is one of the most versatile out there, that's why it's ace!

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

to get to the next stage with the black reach army you have a couple of choices:

choice a: go mechanized

get yourself a couple of nob blisters (with power klaw) and one of those 5 man ork boxes. make that mob of 20 into 2 mobs of 12 w/ a nob and a big shoota (you'll have to come up with another big shoota)

get yourself 3 trukks. one for the warboss and his nobz, and one for each of the squads of boyz.

this will bring your points total up to a nice level. from there its up to you where and how you want to expand.

option b: go footslogging

first thing to do is swap your marines for another set of black reach orks. then you have 2 mobs of 20 boyz, and 10 nobz w/ a warboss.

need to get yourself a 2 more big shootas, and nobz with power klaws

you've got the boss and his nobz, 2 mobs of 20 boyz, and 6 deffkoptas for fast harassment. not a bad start

next purchase should be some more boyz, make them into shootas so you have some variety, then go from there

Just an FYI my play testing with a shooty ORK army just didn't really roll very well. Frankly they need a 5+ to hit which makes shooting pretty problematic. Everything I've read says 'get yoru Orks into CC as quickly as possible', period.

Right now I have a Pretty heavy KOS going LOTSA bikers

A fun thing you could do (for now) is to get two boxes of black reach, and 'loot' the space marine dreadnoughts. That would give you:

2 bosses (which can only be good)
10 nobz (Eh, I'm not sold on nobs tbh)
40 boyz (2 20 strong boy squads makes a good basis for a horde, or gives you 3 trukk loads with a few spares)
6 deffkoptas (I'd recommend 2x3 squads)
2 deff dreads (Just pretend that multimelta is a flamer lol).

Also you could trade the marines for even more orks, making for the start of a phenomal army. The great thing about this starter kit is that all the pieces it comes with are genuinely useful for newcomers and grizzled old players.

As a new ork player, a good way to loot the dreads would be to make some rivets and kitbash them with anything that looks orky (I myself intend on having an ork get stuck into one, with his head popping out, with some greenstuff for effect and angry-ork-stuck-in-metal-thing bash marks). Course, thats just a suggestion if you don't really think the stuff in the Battleforce is helpful. Two AoBR boxes would give you a good basis for a horde, dread wall, and KoS army (though, if you are thinking shooty, it doesn't do ya much)

Ork shooting is awesome now, I assume you haven't played a shooty horde? Orks pull things down not with accuracy but with huge weight of fire. The 'best' ork builds are shooty that then mop up in assault.

I'd personally like a balanced army. I don't actually own the Ork codex yet, I'm going on summary sheets etc.
I should have mentioned the trade I have arranged with my friend; he's getting BfBR as well, and I'm trading the SM in my box for the Orks in his, so I'll have a good-sized army. With a battleforce I can push the points value well over 2,000 points.

I'm thinking lots of Deffkoptas. I love the models!
For my Boyz, I was thinking four squads of twenty; two of them shooting and two more assaulting. That's 80 models, but it's a sum easily acquired.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

With the new dex, I have my footsloggers boyz with shootas and the trukk mounted boyz with c/s. Ork shooty is really quick powerful (always has been in the right builds), but you need a lot of it to make it worthwhile.

Either go with several vehicles or none. If you go with none, the enemy is plunking 6 point boyz with their lascannons/plasma/meltas. If you go with several, make it a mix of battlewagons, trukks and buggies.

You can get a KOS style army on the board fast due to not needing as many bodies. So with 2 BfBR boxes, you've got 3 trukk mobs + extras, a couple of warbosses and a nob squad. Get 4 trukks. Run your koptas as 2x3 units with rokkits, other wargear for flavor.

Generally I don't bother putting upgrade weapons in trukkmobs (except for the pk nob with a bosspole) as they are rarely shooting. But if you want to go with a couple of foot squads take BS (easy enough to make yourself - cut the barrel of an extra shoota, mount it to a shoota, add in ammo belts).

Get 4 boxes of lootas, make 16 lootas and convert the meks to be lootas also with some bitz from your buddies SM army (if possible) - gives you 2x10 lootas.

Get a bike box, convert 2 of them into warbosses to run with your trukks.
