Just to clarify:

Dakkafex- 2x Twin-linked Devourer, Enhanced Senses (113)
6 Strength 6 shots rerolling to hit and to wound

Strangle-hybridfex- Barbed Strangler, Scything Talons (113)
1 Strength 8 AP 5 large blast template scattering an average of 5"

Was wondering which Carnifex build would be the better option, are Dakkafexes still as good as they were in 4th or are Strangle-fexes becoming the new vogue?

sorry, devourers are max S6.

the stranglerfex will do great against hordes where the scattering matters less, but against a non-horde army i think I'd prefer devourers, even at S6

TMC work just as well with all devourers as the RUN allows them to make it in your face on turn 2... you cant avoid them. They will crush vehicles quite nicely too.

I think Dakka fexes are still king. With the dominance of cover saves in 5th, torrent of fire weapons are becoming more and more necessary. No one does torrent of fire better than a Dakka fexes (which actually has 8 Strength 6 shots).

However, the Strangle fex will still be pretty useful since it has some added versatility with the Strenght 8. If the enemy is really bunched up it will kill more, but most opponents are smart enough to spread out their units.

I still think that the Dakka fex has a slight edge.

Strangler-fexes are better,
and six of them of course,
because the range allows you to deploy back a little and draw the enemy. Since they are assault weapons, rear deployment is not hiding, just giving you charge space. It also makes the deep strike zone very hot which will hurt a lot of opponents who are relying on attacking your rear and find it has six big bastards and a handy squad of genestealer bodyguards in it!

The devourers are great gun, but not on carnifexes! On The Hive Tyrant. With toxin sacs and BS buff it is 12 STR 5 shots at BS4 with re-rolls to hit and wound, which is serious pain, when of course you take two of those bastards! They can of course still CC pretty good without any other buffs and don't cost that much.

6 STR 8 pie plates are nice. You just know that they simply have to scatter onto the enemy even when they miss!

hadn't thought about range, yes that does favour the strangler.

How about strangler and Enhanced Senses to help minimise scatter? That can still be done as an Elite fex.

8 shots with Dakkafex, not 6 - only str is 6.

Does that help your math?

ANother bennie to consider is the Barbed Stranglers ability to kill Nobs and Obliteraters and other multi-wound T4 characters.

Another thing to consider is how AP - is less effective on the damage result for vehicles now. If you really want to torrent of fire something you may be better off just loading up tyrants with devourers. Considering how the Venom Cannon is a bit less effective against vehicles, it may be more useful to have lots of barbed stranglers.

Scatter isn't so bad as one might think too. You are still rolling a "Hit" 1/3 of the time, and the rest of the time you scatter it isn't terrible. In every game I have played with blast templates, they rarely have scattered off a unit entirely, and never when the unit is spread out. Usually the only time they manage to scatter off entirely is when the unit is really bunched, which leaves them vulnerable to Hits.
