Particularly:

A) Old, rusty iron. I did a base coat of Tin Bitz and a wash of Boltgun Metal. It looks about the right color, but something is missing. I'm trying to paint some beastman weapons that spend most of their lives in a big ole pile by the herdstone, but just before battle get a quick sharpening.

B) Fabric. I'm imagining something like velvet or a very, very old rug that was once a vibrant color but has been a dog's bed in the garage for 30 years.

Any advice you have is appreciated. Paint recipes and example photographs are especially welcome!

Give the metals some washes. For dirt you need to have the transparent effect and you can achieve it nicely with washes. You can get really nice results with the GW's ogryn flesh followed by devlan mud. After the washes apply some highlights with boltgun and chainamail to give the sharpened edge. You could also put some dark gray washes in there to take away the shine but keeping the gray feeling to the metal.

A way to get a good deep rust and wear into a metal blade is to basecoat it with a reddish brown and then go over parts of it with a metal paint. Makes the weapons a lot less shny, as befits something left to the mercy of the elements.

Look at military models for inspiration, especially things like derelict vehicles and tank tracks.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Rust effects are really easy. The trick is to use Stippling, which is similar in some ways to dry brushing, but you stab down on the surface with the brush. My technique:
1) paint the surface dark brown
2) Heavily stipple orange
3) lightly stipple flesh
4) drybrush steel, as heavily as you'd like.

Thanks for the advice, folks. I'll give some of it a try tonight and see how it goes.

How about worn fabric? I'm thinking of a shaman's cloak that was taken from something not meant to in the elements. I'm guessing I would need something like bleached bone or some kind of light tan color to represent the bare fabric, with lots of splotches of various shades of brown washes to represent stains, and a gradual build up of whatever the original dry color was around the edges and in the areas that don't receive so much exposure. I can't think of a good example I've ever seen of this painted though.

If you can still get to the Orge Kingdom paint tips on GW's site they have some decent tips for old-busted.
