Today I got in a good game, 1st one under 5th ed rules.. a 4 on 3 deal.. the 4 were Grey Knights, Omega Company SM (me), Random Green Marines (NOT DA), and Random Grey/white marines.. vs an unholy coalition of Eldar, Necron and traitor IG. The game actually had started one turn before I arrived, and the "bad guys" got an additional 333 each in reserve to compensate for my 1000 "arriving in reserve" forces.

ANyhow.. this did not actually affect the game much, but I wondered post game if this was possible..

The Necron player had brought along The Nightbringer.. and when that thing rolled up on my Terminators, he mentioned that the NB was armed with a Warscythe, as an upgrade to the character, thus.. no saves, even no invul saves..

well, OK.. I don't play nor own a Necron Codex.. so no worries, keep playing. Lost all terminators.

Game ends. Tied score, all objectives contested.

While driving home, it occured to me... Most SM Special Characters are armed quite specifically.. and cannot be messed with.. Is this true to the Necrons as well? Can the NB, a beast already, be given wargear like that? I just don't know.. and would like to have the answer for the next time I play there.

Anyone?

The Nightbringer isn't armed with a Warscythe.

He is modeled with one.

However, his in-game EFFECTS are identical.

He is a monstrous creature (ignores armor saves) AND has the C'Tan special rule (ignores invulnerable save). I think it's life drain or some such.

So anyway it's the same thing either way.

Only a Necron Lord gets the Warscythe (and Pariahs).

A new day, a new time zone.

No, the Nightbringer cannot be armed with a Warscythe. However, C'tan are monstrous creatures, and so ignore Armor Saves. A special ability of the Necrodermis (which warscythes are apprently made out of) is to ignore Invulnerable saves in CC. So while C'tan can't carry warscythes, they can ignore Armor and Invulnerable saves in CC.

Nightbringer and Deceiver both ignore Invulnerable saves as part of their special rules, but it has nothing to do with being armed with a warscythe. What the guy probably meant to say is "Nightbringer's close combat attacks ignore invulnerable saves, just like a warscythe." You are correct that Nightbringer can't buy additional weapons or wargear. Even if he did buy a warscythe for Nightbringer it would be a waste of points since it wouldn't give any advantage over his normal attacks.

OK.. thanks much!

we had a good time too.. it just stunk to have a major character like him in a 1000 point per person game..

any ideas in the future on how to beat him? Our best bet was the Demonhunter HQ.. but he was no where close to the C'tan..

was thinking massed Lascannon fire..

In a 1000 point game you'd be better off avoiding the Nightbringer, who is an assault monster that moves at infantry pace, and focus on his warriors. He can't possibly have more than 35 on the field at this points level, and killing 2/3 of that makes the rest phase out, Nightbringer included.

go for the phase out, in a game that low in points just focus shooting on the warriors and watch his army go
cheap trick, but its effective.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

Not a cheap trick. It's one of the tactics for beating them.

Besides ignoring him and phaseing out the rest of the force (best plan) try these

For imperials- Sniper Rifles are quite potent against a C'tan, because it renders their high toughness useless, and forces them to make saves. The sniper unit then becomes an item of attraction on feild, and will almost always draw about twice its point cost in fire or assault- paying for itself. Its a great smoke and Mirrors deception that is actually fairly deadly sometimes.

Marines- Scouts with sniper rilfes. Infiltrate somewhere away from an objective, and watch your opponent advance towards you.

Guard- Ratlings. amazing at C'tan killing. 10 get it done in 2 to 3 turns, depending on situation. Infiltrate as above.

Daemonhunters- GK grand master has a 1/6 chance of wounding with a force weapon, and causing instant death with a leadership check. Also- Vindicare if you are into that kind of thing.

...one amongst untold billions.

I played necrons for about 2 years (still do I guess just haven't played recently) and any decent player I played just avoided the nightbringer at all costs and concentrated on other things.

I'll go with supercow on that one... the C'Tan are a waste of points better spent on warriors, destroyers, or immortals. Go for the Phase Out against low point necron armies that field high point units... remember that it's not 25% of the point value of the army - it's 25% of the MODELS designated as necrons and C'tan, scarabs, monoliths, and pariahs don't count towards that total.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I like the Deceiver, his redeployment rule is rather nice in 5th where you can set up, see where your opponent sets up, then have a chance to move your units in response befor you take the first turn.

Especially in 5th edition - taking a c'tan at 1k is essentially tellin your oppenent, 'you win.'

i've found as an Ork the best way to take a C'tan down is with Lootas, he can't make that many armor saves!

as a daemon player, I enjoy our good friend Skulltaker. I think his actual name is U'Zuhl or thereabouts, but I prefer to call him Mentok the Skulltaker (ooo-eee-eee-ooh!). The Skulltaker (just a plain boring one on foot, nevermind on a chariot) goes first with 5 attacks, hits on 3s, inflicting instant death on 4+ (so much for S4 vs. T8), and ignores armor saves. Decapitation's a bad way to go, even for a C'tan god.

But I'll add my 2 cents to the aforementioned and more simply achieved method of success, just hosing down his warriors and watching that C'tan fade to black with a single tear rolling down his cheek.
