like the title says i'm getting my little brother into 40k and he seems interested in the deathwing for a number of reasons.

He likes the idea of a small elite hard hitting force (which is good for me cause i'm painting all his models and good for him cause he's on a limited budget).

So with black reach coming out i figured it would be a good time for him to start since we could go in together and he could get a bunch of SM cheap.

He also likes tanks, and i thought they were a good idea for some heavy hitting anti-armor punch.

So with those criteria in mind i was wondering what a good list for the DW would be?

I'm thinking (off the top of my head and without an in depth knowledge of DA codex).

Belial so he could get termies as troops for objective games.

interrogator Termie Chaps for assault term squad and because that model practically sold him on the army.

4 squads of deathwing termies broken down like this:

1 squad all assault, prob 4 light claws, and a thunder hammer.

3 squads with an asscan, chainfist, 1 light claw, the rest normal. or light claw depending on factors.

2 venerable dreads with lascanon and close combat arm.

1 land raider crusader for the assault squad and chaps.

1 pred annihilator.

plan would be to roll with land raider flanked by the two dreads and the pred to take on any heavy armor from a distance.

then teleport the 3 squads of termies where needed, ie. objectives, into combat et cetera.

i think with the new black reach set and smart shopping i could put this army together for under $200 or maybe a little more.

Comments, criticisms welcome

Looks good. Dreads for shooty support should either have lascannon and missile launcher, or be mounted in drop pods heavy flamers.

yeah i'm liking the general idea of the army. I guess a big question would be how exactly to load out each termie squad? I think paying the extra 5 points for a chainfist is better than taking two thunderhammers, although i play orks and an extra d6 for 5 pts when rolling for penetration sounds to good to be true for me.
i guess the real question is how many pairs of lightening claws does he need in a squad? ideally i was thinking of all lightening claws so he would get the initiative on most things, but the shooting of the storm bolters might come in handy.

I'd run more ven dreads than run a pred.

I don't think you need a land raider in this army.

I also don't think you need a dedicated CC unit in this army.

Deathwing with ven dreads lends itself to moving wherever it needs to, and smushing the enemy flatter than a pancake with shooty.

The main problem I see with all deathwing armies (and in fact, all terminator armies outside the new smurf codex) is you have ZERO meltaguns.

That means you will have a hell of a time killing tanks.

Personally I'd probably do this:

4 DW squads.
3 ven dreads.
3 AC/las preds.

Then add in more DW as you can. I'd also take CML on the DW. They aren't good at asscannon because with the change to rending and vehicle damage table...you might as well just not try to kill vehicles with DW at range. CC you sure can, but at range...forget it. Only BT can do it now, because they get tank hunters AND double asscannons...and it's STILL not a guarantee, but it is very good in the realm of 5th edition.

Hope that helps man.
