I think I'm going to go with this scheme. Since there are a 120 bugs, the scheme has to be as simple as possible.

Step 1: Spray prime Rustoleum High Heat (Almond)
Step 2: Basecoat carapace in Mechrite Red
Step 3: Wash entire figure in Liquitex Raw Umber (same mixing properties as Paynes Grey)
Step 4. Give mount, talons, and hooves a wash of Badab Black. Pick out eyes in Scorpion Green and the teeth in Skull White.

I will probably thicken my wash a little bit and maybe edge the carapace in a lighter color, but first things first.

i like it, basic, quick, and looks good.
nids are always best painted with drybrushing and washes to make it quick lol

Similar to what I did, but better looking.

I did the white spray / mechrite red part, gave the the mechrite red a bit of a highlight and then washed the lot with a coat of Gryphon Sepia. Quick, dirty and great for gaunts !!

That's why I went with the almond spray. The extra touch of color on the undercoat enhances the Raw Umber wash vs. the white. Also, it's a lot easier to mix up a big batch of Raw Umber than it is to use the Citadel Washes, it's also cheaper.

Looks great for what you want.

Wouldn't bother with leg armour or tail spines just yet.
I would get them all done to this standard with bases(of course)
then revisit those parts on rainy days.

Just get them on the table!!!!!

No, the Raw Umber I use is a soft acrylic paint made by Liquitex that comes in a soft goop format.

If you've seen my article on Paynes Grey: http://www.kan.org/michael/mkp/paynes_grey.php

It's from the same line and has the same mixing requirements. It works a little differently than the washes and I can mix up a lot more wash for much less $. Citadel washes are $3.00 per pot, I can probably mix up several cups of wash with a $6.00 bottle of Liquitex Raw Umber. In fact, I use this for washing the sand on all of my bases.
