right. so i saw the artical on how to dip nids, and long story shot i now own nids.

i am going to dip them in hive fleet kraken colors.
spray them with bone, red carapace, tallons, and other claws, green eyes, white teeth, i am thinking something pinkish for the parts that looked like the skin is riped.

but i am a little worried as to how the big bugs will turn out. and how well the metal ones like the brood lord and hive tryant will hold up to the flinging / spinning to get the dip off.

my hive tyrant is a winged one, just the plain old metal hive tyrant with plastic dragon wings in the top two arm sockets.... he is winged yes, but i still dont want to see him flying around the room when i start spinning the dip off.

the carnifex i am a little worried as to how the model will look after the dip has been spun off. i know it will hold up to the spinning (testors is amazing)

one more thing
im not sure what color to paint the scything tallons on the big guys. there is carapace armor right on top of the blade. both of which should be painted red, but then the tallon is just a big red pointy thing (hay, if it was an ork it would go fasta )

so anyone got any dipping experance with large models like the carnifex, and metal ones like the hive tyrant?? or any tips as to how to get past my big red blob of a scything tallon???

i allways paint the carapace different to the talons lol.

and it might be an idea to pin metal models before hand, stops them falling apart.

Make sure they are solidly attached to their base. One or more pins/connections are recommended. I would have a paint brush with some thinner on it handy to dab at some of the big surfaces and thin out the stain and chase it into the crevices. On big flat surfaces, like a rhino, it will crackle since it shrinks as it dries. With irregular surfaces, like the shell of a fex, I don't think you'll see that since it is fairly well contoured.

the tryant has a pin in his head. but no pins for the lower part of the body and the legs (i wanted to get those one just so i could call it a night and not be bugged about it). his tail will be pined on, as will his weapons (2 sets of scything tallons). i am thinking abput maginitising the talons on, so i can switch them out for a 2x dev winged tyrant.

for the tallons, i am thinking mabey a dark red.

If it's not too late, you could try breaking the model back down and painting/dipping individual parts or assemblies. Perhaps Legs/torso/head, and individual scy-tal arms. Post dip assembly isn't too bad as long as you're surgical with your glue. Seems to me to be the least risky way to do larger metal models.

Instead of actually dipping and spinning the big bugs, you could just paint the dip on like a wash to prevent the possible damage. Dipping and spinning is a time saving technique that produces really nice results. Considering there aren't that many big bugs to do, painting on the dip won't take very long, since it's done like a wash anyway.
