use greenstuff, just make a fairly thick layer over the base, then clump it in places.
if you have a model that has a tread on his boots then press that into a bass for more detail.
on bigger bases you could even make tank track marks.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

You can also mix some PVA glue with fine sand and some dark brown paint and then use this to paint onto figures or on the base

you can also try -
pva the base, add fine sand, then when the glue has started to set, cover with watered down pva (with a tiny drop of washing-up liquid to break the tension). this will smooth out the mix making it look more like wet mud.

you could also try wall filler - the stuff in the squeezy tube for filling small cracks will work really well. apply to base (try the warmachine ones to get good depth) then leave to set a bit. while still tacky, push in the mini to create footprints so you can locate the mini once the filler is dry.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Practice on some empty bases first. Get the hang of what you want before putting it on any models.

practice on empty bases, that's a good way to start.

Rather than using regular sand, I'd go with some corn-meal. It is a cheap and easy way to get some fine sand for the base, and it mixes very well with extra glue.

I would put the corn meal or sand on the bases unevenly, trying to get lower points, then fill those in with green stuff or PVA glue. You might want to put two coats of the glue over some spots.

This will allow the mud to look like it puddles in certain points.

Also, you should probably do this after glueing the minis to their bases (although this is not necessary for the test bases) since that way you get the look of feet that are just a little sunk in the mud.
