Have a Ard Boyz Tourney in a few weeks and since I'm still pretty new to 40k after a long absense. I'd appreciate anyone's suggested lists. I will be going up against Orks, SM Bikes, Eldar, and I'm sure several MEQs. I have the models to do just about anything. Just need some inspiration and suggestions. So far I've only played small point battles 600-1000 pointers. I know the guys that play in these tourneys are pretty cutthroat, and I dont have giant aspirations of winning the whole damn thing, but I would at least like to put on a good showing.

Now I'll just need to try making a sacrifice to the dice gods.
Last night I rolled 10 d6 at once for to-hit rolls and rolled all 10 .
One was even cocked, so I rerolled that and got ..... ..... .
So yeah, I'll be in need of some divine assistance on this one.
Emporer bless us all.
And then to top that off my 2 grenade lanucher rounds drifted right over my nice new infantry squad that had just deepstriked into the game that turn and decimated it. again.

Thanks for any and all help.

I did see Ubermosher's Armored Company list that was posted right after my build request, but I would rather not do a straight up AC, although I probably have enough vehicles to do it. lol.

Will patiently await any and all suggestions.

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

Well as far as appeasing the dice gods go, ritually scarring yourself, or sacrificing any immediate relatives should just about do the trick.

But as far as a list goes, what models do you have, and what kind of army do you want to play?

For people with lots of models who are returning to the game there are a few things I would suggest:

1) get the rule book. It's kinda useful to have

2) play whatever army you would have a fun time playing with, then you can figure out what works better, or worse, within the army type you want.

I have a very large number of Praetorians (4-5k worth of troops) as well as around 2k each of Catachans, Valhallans, and Tallarn each. Also have about 2 squads of Attilian RRs and 3 squads of Tallarn RRs. Have many, many, many vehicles Leman Russ Tanks, Demolishers, Hellhounds, Basilisks, Griffons and half a dozen old school sentinels. Also have about 10 ogryn, 20 ratlings, and a little over a hundred necromunda figs I could use as conscripts. Also have Psykers, priests, tech adepts and servitors, and assassin figs as well.

Would prefer to run a mainly infantry with vehicle/armor support. Although I'm open to any suggestions. I quit playing around the beginning of 3rd edition, so there's a few changes I'm trying to wrap my head around, as well as just getting back into the flow of 40k gaming as well.

Any and all suggested lists would be helpful and appreciated.

It mostly depends on your style of play. Do you want a quick and fast Drop Troop army that is loaded with plasma/melta to the brim with multiple veterans with special weapons? Or would you like a mechanized ground army with lots of tanks and everything in chimeras? I would however recommend against the use of carapace armour as you can take ST for that price and take better weapons with BS 4 to boot. If you Want the drop army take Veterans, COD, ID, drop troops and if you want MORE special weapons take the special weapons squad...demo charges can be quite fun. Load up on troops and give everyone plasma with melta to veterans and plasma pistols on the unit leaders. The 5th edition (nice if you have rule book) focuses on objectives more and kill points ( GW) which are bad for IG. The units can drop on top of important areas and take out isolated threats. I would also advise against a gun line as they will have difficulty in 2/3 of the missions trying to seize objectives and need to move. The mechanized idea would use all many of those tanks you have and would allow for a quick and durable force that can grab objectives easily and deal out plenty of punishment.

If you have a style youy lkie say it and we can try to come up with something.

Thats 2500 on the nose. Would really appreciate any constructive criticisms or suggestions. The more I look at this I suddenly an becoming worried that I may not have enough objective capturing units. but my plan of attack is to get my base of fire laid down with my command group and anchor my line with the tanks and provide indirect support with the basilisk. Will infiltrate or drop the elite units in as needed, and also drop one or both line platoons in as the situation/battle dictates. i have started off smaller battles with one line platoon on the board and 1 in reserve, and have also played where i started with both held in reserve. the sentinels will be my scouting force and run around causing as much disruptive mayhem as possible. Or at least thats my vague general plan for the battle....am i going about this the wrong way? Any and all suggestions welcome.

dropped the Sharpshooter doctrine from the command squad, after all....template weapons dont roll to hit. duh!!!

I used those points to give Stormtrooper Sergeant carapace armor and the Leman Russ Tank the rough terrain mod.

Stormtroopers and stormtrooper sergeants already have carapace armor. You do not need to buy it separately. They also already have frag and krak grenades, so you don't have to buy those for the sergeant either.

In general you're buying way more antitank grenades than you probably should.

I didnt buy the stormtroopers the frag & krak. they came with their points cost, as did the models using hellguns w/targeters so those were already in there i just listed them (like the regular line grunts using lasguns) because they are the models equipment.

thanks for pointing out the redundancy of giving the stormtrooper sergeant carapace since it doesnt improve his stat line any. i took those 5 points and gave the Demolisher the rough terrain mod as well.

I tend to buy up on the anti-tank grenades because a couple games now i've had squads that didnt have a way to effectively engage vehicles/units with high armor values.

If you have a better suggestion for the points i'm spending on all those anti-tank grenades and such please let me know.

Thanks!

The vast open plains of North America

10x Die Hards = 50 points
Infantry Krak Grenades: 100 points
Sharpshooters on 4 Infantry squads + Mortar Squad = 50 points

If you drop these, it will free up 200 points, and I'm betting it results in an almost negligble reduction in power.

Die Hards is now very bad, because you want to break from combat. The enemy can no longer consolidate into a new squad, leaving you the ability to use bucketloads of close range firepower on them. Die Hards prevents this wonderful event from occuring.

Sharpshooters on line squads, especially squads with flamers is mathematically a pretty poor investment of points. It gets you about an 8% increase in firepower (I think), and costs well more than 8% of the squad points. It also does nothing for mortars.

Krak Grenades are much better in 5th, but way too expensive for the Guard. You payed 100 points for your troop choices to get them. That's more than another squad of infantry. You don't have to do everything with a squad of guardsmen, you have to do one thing. Think about buying an anti-tank unit of your choice with that 100 points, add more meltaguns, buy another squad, etc. Remember, your sergeants still have meltabombs, so each of those squads still has some AT power.

Anyway, you've got 200 points to play with there. I would also cut other stuff, like the veteran sergeants and their goodies, and some of the vehicle upgrades, but those are smaller problems, in my opinion, than the things I've pointed out.

ok, dropped Die-Hards from line squads, and also the krak grenades from line squads. Dropped sharpshooters from the mortar squad also(thought i had done that already, thanks for pointing it out).

if i cut the vet sergeants though, i lose the meltabombs and then have no anti-tank in my lines except the 2 command squads.

I'm leary of taking Die-Hards off my command squads, only because every game I've played where my squad has broken from HtH combat and run after a failed leadership they have been mowed down by the enemy doing a sweeping advance. Tha and being a real world Army combat veteran, its a hard thing to do to let me men retreat in the face of the enemy. Even though it may be more tacticly sound, its psychologically hard to convince myself to let happen.

I grabbed the sharpshooter doctrine only because for whatever reason I always seem to roll ALOT of 1s. I know its all random, but I just seem to be a 1 magnet. Unless of course I'm rolling a leadership test. I may end up dropping it from all my squads except the fire support squads, but i'll have to think alittle more about that part.

So far I've got 110 more points freed up, I will have to see what other things I can do with those. Thanks for the advise....please keep it coming.

OK, I took the 110 points I freed up after the last suggestions and added 2 remnant squds to my line platoons, each with a meltagun and meltabombs for the veteran sergeants. I also gave the 2 tank smoke launchers. Is this a better use of points, or would you suggest doing something different.

Thank you for everyone who has made critiques and given advise.

Drop the rest of the Die-Hards and change it to iron discipline, save you some points and it's way better in 5th edition than Die-Hards.

p.s. i'd check with your store on how they are reading the rules for the tourney, it'll be the difference between fielding 17 KP's and fielding 40ish KP's

I'm just gonna try tabling my opponent. I do not see how else an IG army is gonna go anywhere in an Ard Boyz Tourney if i just try and objective sit and match KPs for KPs. It aint gonna happen and I fully realize it.

Truth be told I'd be very surprised to win any games. The guys that play down where the tourney is are pretty hardcore 40k players, and ruthless as a Commisar Yarick with a wedgie. I've been otta wargaming for so long that I just wanna make a good showing and have some fun and support my friends who are going with their orc, Nurgle, and DE armies respectively.

And who knows, all those ritual sacrifices to the dice gods may pay off and I might squeek outta there with a win or Emporer bless me even two. The odds may be stacked against me but thats why we actually play the games, right? Anything can happen.

Yep you have to wipe out a whole platoon to get a kill point, go IG!

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

From what i understand, Lascannon, and AC builds are really good. And against Bikes, Orcs, and eldar, I think you will far pretty well. Maybe no so much against the eldar, but yeah, overall I think you will do fine. I have yet to see an IG army actually move to fight. Just sit back, hit with your heavy weapons and decimate your opponet. Hope this helps!
