For those of you who have cavalry models (whether in 40k or WFB):

Do you all glue the riders to their mounts, or keep them separate?
Also, what's the best way to store/transport them?

Thanks.

it's certainly possible to magnetise them so that the riders can be changed (in fact some gamers glue the riders legs to the mount but magnetise the riders' torsoes for easy swapping).

But most cavaltry I've seen is permanently all glued together.

I wouldn't recommend leaving riders 'loose' - they'd be forever falling off during battle, with severe morale effects

Most figure storage cases will require some foam chopping to fit cavalry - but maybe some manufacturers make cavalry-sized foam compartments.

I glue mine together, but it's more of a pain to transport them that way (especially
the lance wielders). I figure that battlefield movement more than makes up for this
(guys falling off their horses would annoy me, and I dislike painting things separately).

I glue mine to the mounts after painting. I always grab the figs from the riders so the separate riders would irritate me to no end.

Yeah, right now I have my riders and mounts separate for ease of painting, but as of the moment, I've pinned the riders and drilled a hole into the mounts so that everything sits pretty. Not as neat and wear-n-tear free as magnets, but effective.

As for storage - I suppose this is part of the reason why I ask about the putting-together of cavalry. It seems awkward enough with a guy waving a spear, and would seem really space-eating to be on a horse as well. I was considering getting some of those Sabol Army Transport trays - anyone know what size would work well for this?

I tried magnets before but polarity was a big probem. Also they would sit too high on the horse and it looked wierd. I now pin them on. It works FANTASTIC.

Dunno what smart_alex is saying, polarity with the magnets isn't a problem if you pay attention when you're putting the models together. Also the model sitting high means he didn't drill out holes to recess the magnets into. With that said, I say magnets would be the way to go for the cavalry. Strong so the rider stays during play plus it makes storage and travel much easier.

1.5" thick sabol trays should do the trick for most riders, though really it all depends on how you've got the lance, banner, weapons, etc modelled on him.

I will magnetize (now doing LED as well) your models for you, send me a DM!

I glue my officers, but I am planning to magnetize my rough riders for easier transport.

Magnetizing is the way to go with Cavalry!

Just sink the magnet a little into both rider and mount and they'll be fine, never heard of anyone having polarity problems, lol.

Makes transporting them much much easier as well.

Re: The polarity thing:

The easiest way I've found to make sure every horse has (say) North and every rider has South is to drill out the hole in the horse, throw any of the magnets into it and glue it down. Now make sure the glue is dry, take another magnet and without gluing it to anything, make it click onto the attached one. Mark the exposed side (I just use permanent marker). THE EXPOSED/MARKED SIDE IS THE SIDE YOU GLUE TO THE INSIDE OF THE RIDER. Do ALL your riders, one at a time, using the same horse to check which way round your magnet goes.

When you've done all the riders, do exactly the same thing - take a rider, add a magnet, mark the exposed side, glue that side to the INSIDE of the horse. When you're done all the riders will have one polarity, and all the horses will have the opposite, so that any rider can go on any horse

Hope that helps,

Why not magnetize one and put metal on the other? Or is that harder to stick?

That'll work ok but the magnet-magnet bond is much stronger; given that you're trying to hold a whole model on a rounded surface, I'd use two magnets in this case.

If you have room in your backseat just glue them. Then just but them, standing up, in their tray, in a box in your back seat and don't slam on the breaks. It works for me and I drive an hour to get to where I play through some Atlanta traffic at some points.

I stand my cavalry models up in the foam, but I've never had lances before.

Well it depends on if you are going to store them on the side or standing. If standing then measure the height of the tallest fig and get the tray which is a bit taller. I assume 3" tray would do the trick. If you are going to put them on their sides them 1,5" tray should be enough.

Sabol cases are nice, I have one for my Warmachine stuff, and the possibility to get different trays for different figs is really good. I store all my WM figs standing, but the 40k orks are going on their sides as I have several 1" trays for which I have no other use.
