well the best thing about slann is you pick your spells after you see what your facing. if your playing against brets or empire, you can pick alot of lore of metal. against horde you can pick alot of zappy spells.
when building a slann it comes down to 2 options really. 4th generation or 2nd generation. running a slann defines your army choices.
for a year i ran a 2nd generation slann, the model got me into fantasy. i ran this loadout:
2nd generation Slann
plaque of tepok (+1 spell)
plaque of dominion (+1 casting and dispel dice)
diadem of power
BSB, totem of prophecy (fear banner)
16 temple guard
coming in at near 1000 points this is the power slann, ultra caster. nick named the "leman russ" in alot of games this lil frog can really dish it out. i ran the fear banner simply cuz when i first started playing i got charged by a screaming bell unit and got chopped down from fear.
as of late ive been running an old blood. but ive been thinking about running a 4th generation slann without bodyguard, just chilling and doing his thing.
IMO you want 4th generation minimum to ignore miscasts.
a 4th geenration slann ive been kicking around is:
4th generation slann
plaque of tepok (+1 spell)
Plaque of protection (2+ ward)
bane head (hurts one enemy character really badly)
BSB
alot cheaper and doesnt lose alot of his potency. can take cannonballs to the face and laugh it off most of the time. he give you back your hero and rare slot that the 2nd generation eats up. im really digging the cost effectiveness of this guy as well.

Never field a 5th gen. If you're going to field a Slann, make it a 4th gen to ignore miscasts.
Making him a BSB for 25 points? Sure!
I normally throw on the warbanner on top of that. With that, he has a static res of +2 (2 banners) sometimes +3 with outnumber (US5). Combined with a good challenge, he can hold on his own for a little while until backup arrives.
However, he really shouldn't be in combat.
Bane Head makes for an excellent sniping tool. Target a BSB with a good armour save and grab Rule of Burning Iron (1rst metal spell, can't miss it), and you have a 5+ spell that can kill a character out of units.
The Diadem of Power is good for more dice. Can't use two power dice? Get two more dispel. Playing against Dwarfs? 2 more power dice each turn.
Plaque of Tepok. +1 spell for 15 points. Never leave home without it.
When I ran a second gen, and really wanted to win with magic, I used the Plaque of Dominion for extra dice. It did bring the pain.
I never use plaque of Protection and I've only ever lost the Slann once to shooting. Most people will assume that you have it, and shoot cannonballs elsewhere. Even though I declare all the items on him at the start of the game (open lists round here), some people still assume he has the 2+. (shrugs) I only correct them when they shoot him.
Hope that helps!

Ya know, I remember when you weren't chaotic unless you had at least 3 eyes, some kind of grotsque extra limb, and your blood was at least boiling acid. Apparently all need these days to be chaos is some skulls and an arrow on your forhead. - Kaile Bloodhammer |

I do as suggested above but never run him in a unit (primarily as I don't have temple guard painted but also because when I ran him in a unit of saurus he was hammered).
I run him up the middle of the main force to spread his Ld and BSB coverage over more troops and prefer magic missiles to snipe the enemy (he should never be in combat).
Another favorite tactic is to park him in/behind a forest and use a skink shaman's line of sight to blast the enemy using telepathy. Drives the enemy nuts.
