I suck at basketball.
Actually, I am pretty good. But I suck at every other sport so I just assume I suck at basketball, too. Except when I am playing it.
And when I say sports, I mean hockey.

I'd guess since they know how they are going to die, they just push the leader out of the way and take the cannon to the face, fulfilling their foreseen fate.

Maybe they can forsee their death but not the time so they sort of realise at that moment as the cannonball rushes towards their commander.
