Is this a good psychic power? I mean I used to think it wasnt any good but the chance to turn any model into a spawn is a pretty broken ability. Also, It seems like you could use this to help out in assault by turning a power fist model into a spawn. Does anyone have any experience running lists that are gifts of chaos heavy?

It's better than paying points for a chaos spawn in your army list, and it's something that you can use even if you're stuck in combat the whole game. I've only tried it once, but it was on a sorcerer and I was messing around with too much other stuff at the time to get a good feeling for it.

Whether that makes it worth buying instead of some more units is hard to tell.
The downside is that the spawn is a single unit (and thus gives up a kill point), it doesn't get to do anything on the turn that it comes into existence, and it has no armor save.

But for a 1/3 or 1/2 chance to instantly kill Mr. Powerfist or Mr. 2W 5+ Inv. save, you may find it entertaining.

its not worth it. for the same cost you can have a template that wounds on 4+ and ignores armour and cover saves. against marines it will only work 1/3 of the time, and although the thought of turning a carnifex into a spawn is nice it will only never happen. its only good against low toughness things, such as grots or guard, but they are usually in sufficient numbers to make wind of chaos superb. take that instead.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

solkan:

The Gift of Chaos is resolved at the beginning of the player's turn and that means the Spawn will be able to move, run, and assault in that turn.

Unlike Doombolt, Lash of Submission, Winds of Chaos, Bolt of Change, the Gift of Chaos psychic power can be used if the Sorcerer is engaged in combat.

A Sorcerer with the Mark of Tzeentch, Warptime, and Gift of Chaos is a close combat monster since he has three powers (Force Weapon included) that can be used in combat.

Nurglitch is right. I was getting Boon of Mutation and Gift of Chaos mixed up.

The spawn created by the psychic power does get to do something useful when created.

It is extremely useful to get you out of a tight spot in CC. Spawn an enemy character or powerfist model and booooyah.
