Reading through the 5E book and ot to wondering about dedicated transports... They can't hold objectives...but can they contest them? Dedicatde transports seem to fit the description of vehicles(p.5) .... vehicles are a specifuc unit type (p. 5). All units can contest an objective. (p.91)

Also, p. 87 dedicated transports.... "A rhino bought for a space marine tactical squad counts as a unit of troops."

So can rhinos and razors contest objectives?

Everything contests objectives.

No, "any unit" within 3"...p.91.

Hense my question...is the dedicated transport a unit? I think it is. I just wanted others opinions as to whether or not the rhino is in fact a unit and hence capable of contending.

Yes.

You'll find references in the various codexes to the Transport functioning as a 'seperate unit'

A unit is about as loosely defined as you could ask for - it can be several models that fight as a group, or single models. I can't think of a single example of something that *isn't* a unit - even spore mines should qualify.

if it's worth a kill point it has to be a unit and transports are clearly given as an example of an attachment that's worth a kill point, it can contest

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Thanks guys. I guess there is another use for my transports besides movable walls.

These kinds of questions come up repeatedly and I have a bit of a hard time understanding the constant confusion that, not just you ender, but many have regarding this.

The rules in the game are written for units. In the movement phase you pick a unit and move it. In the shooting phase you pick a unit and shoot with it. In the assault phase you pick a unit and assault with it.

Everything in the game is a unit. While units are sometimes made up of multiple models if a model or models aren't a unit they are unable to perform any of the basic actions of the game or be affected by any of the basic actions of the game (generally only units can be shot at or assaulted, for example).

So yes a transport is a unit; a vehicle unit to be exact.

In a friendly game 2 weeks ago I tank shocked a mob of fearless orks to get within range of an objective. Won us the game.

Please note - terms like 'always/never' are carried with the basic understanding that there are exceptions to the rule, and therefore are used to mean generally...
