My first question is about the striking scorpion exarch's bitting blade. If I hit with it 3 times are all the attacks at S7, or is it the first is at S5 the second at S6 and the third at S7? My second question is about pathfinders. On a roll of a 5&6 to hit it's AP1, and on top of that when I roll to wound any normal hits get a second chance to get AP1 on a 6 via rending? If so thats sick! I apprecate any help anyone can give to clear this up for me.

Ok, to answer your second question, the to wound roll results of a 6 are treated as AP2, never AP1.
Now to answer your first question, he attacks all 3 times at Str 7.

Actually, the codex rule says that it counts as AP 1, and as the codex is more specific, it supplants the AP 2 of the rending effect.
|
As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

To clarify:
If you roll a 5 or 6 to hit, the shot is AP1 even if you roll a 6 to wound....and is effectively meaningless as AP1 and AP2 do the same thing versus Toughness.
If you roll a 3 or 4 to hit, the shot is only improved in AP if you roll a 6 to wound.
So the AP1 shot is only useful against vehicles, which require you to rend...and as the rules are written I'd say the shot is both AP1 and AP2 at the same time. Not that that matters either, since it only needs to be AP1 to gain +1 to the damage table.
All around, it all seems meaningless really.

If you shoot at a vehicle you can't get AP2 as you don't roll to wound. A 6 on penetration just gives an extra d3 penetration, it does not modify AP.

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"... |

On the biting blade, all would be at the same S, depending on how many times you hit.

Actually make Eldar Sniper Rifles quite naughty against Vehicles thanks to the Rending and Sniper. I think.
IIRC, Sniper Rifles give 2D6 Penetration, so the Rending would make it 2D6+D3...thats enough, providing you roll really, really spawnily to knack even a Monolith.
You know, the more I think about it, the more I am sure I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Living metal would change that sniper into 1D6 for AP, not 2d6 +d3. I think. It seems to me that exactly what living metal does in this edition is not fully set out yet.

Err, i thought snipers were changed to Str 3 and Rending, so you would only be rolling the standard one dice of penetration plus the str 3, plus rending.

Not really. Sniper rifles are strength 3 against armor. So you have to roll a 5-6 to hit, then a 6 on the armor pen. After that, you get an extra d3. So you end up with at 10-12 spread there with ap 1. Working out the mathhammer...
AV 10 = 2/6*1/6*1 = 1/18 or 5.6% to glance and 1/27 or 3.7% to pen
AV 11 = 2/6*1/6*2/3 = 1/27 or 3.7% to glance and 1/54 or 1.9% to pen
AV 12 = 2/6*1/6*1/3 = 1/54 or 1.9% to glance, pen is impossible
Not exactly steller comming from guys that are 24 points a piece.

Yeah pretty much a "only do this if you have nothing better to shoot at". At least they have the option Vs 4th Ed where they did not.

Marine killing...... There's a better option for that...
