alright so as you know last weekend was ard boyz... I went... I played... I lost horribly. unfortunatley me and one of my friends did not get to face off and I was very much looking forward to piting the my zealot templars (black templars) agianst his wolves of fenris (space wolves). so me and him have decided on a 2000 point grudge match unfortunatley I dont know much about the wolves and what I do know scares me slightly especialy his blood claws. any advice on how to best engage the the fierce wolves of fenris?

Take more guys.

Space Wolf players always run into the issue of having smaller, more expensive armies than average for marines. Although their high number of attacks in melee can make up for the numbers deficiency, their shooting game is not that great. Long Fangs die horribly with no ablative wounds and being forced to take 1 HQ for every 750 points soaks up a lot of spare force org room.

So with that said, put your guys in land raiders, shoot him until he gets close, and then assault him. It's very important you don't let his blood claws assault you, as they will double their number of attacks. Likewise make sure you're basing as many models as possible because SW have counterattack, giving them another +1 A for swinging into combat during the Defender Reacts phase of the assault.

But with the always hitting on 3+ vow and enough dudes in raiders, you should be able to pull off the win without much trouble.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I played Space Wolves for the first six years of this hobby... and I don't think they're THAT 'ard at all. They excel against other MEqs, with their nice power weapon availability, although Chaos can usually outnumber them pretty badly...

But you're playing Black Templars. Theoretically you have somewhat balanced forces, it just depends on constitution.

So what's he got, and what are you fielding?

+ what 'clams said.

If he is podding in, just castle up with your least valuable units on the outside. Then let lose with your whole army on half of his. Remember that when drop pods explode, they hurt everything around them.

If he's running a more conventional force, just sit back and shoot the heck out of him as he tries to close. The blood claws can come in from your board edge, but they can't move within 1" of one of your models, so if you stretch out a large squad of yours across your board edge (models are touching the board edge and have a full 2" coherency gap between each of them) you can cover 28" of your board edge with just 10 guys. It goes up to 51" if you use 20 guys. This will mean that the only places they can come in on are the corners of your deployment zone and the only things they can assault are the sacrificial squads you've put across your back line to suck them up. After that, they're sitting out in the open way back from your main force.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

Your thinking of Wolf Scouts, not Blood Claws. Blood Claws don't have infilitrate or scout rules so no outflank or funny stuff. The sure fire way to get around the line up the back edge would be to drop a pod close to the back edge and just blow a hole in the screen on turn 1.

Anyway, the best way to deal with the Wolfs is from range. They want to be close, no reason for you to be close unless your playing BA or Khorne. Having good mobility will also hamstring Wolfs if you can get around them once their pods land. You just have to survive the initial beating you get when they land or pop out of their rhinos.

The Wolves are a fun, but badly overcosted list. A good player can get mileage oot of any army they're familliar with, but I wouldn't be overly scared of the Wolves, as they pay a lot for most things.

As has been said, shooting them off the table is best. Mech/Suit Tau would be a great example of a nightmare list for them.

Unfortunately for you, you're probably forced into engaging him on his strengths (CC) since you're Templars. Given that your army is a bit more points efficient, you've got a good start there, but for some stupid reason BT Power Fists are nerfed, and he in turn can bring tons of the things.

Need to know more aboot the lists involved to suggest anything really useful, tho.

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

There are only 2 really effective space wolf army types. Those who roll, and those who fall. The falling wolves are relatively easy, once they've landed you mount up in rhinos, razorbacks, Landraiders, and whatever else is in the new dex. Then, you run... You run to the other side of the board if he's set up a really solid wave, or if he's used some other insidious deployment strategy. Then you sit, shoot, and try to pick off units that have gone too far ahead.

The rolling wolves are a little different. What i would do is set up your units in a box formation of sorts, with your buffer units in front, your top 2 units right behind, and right behind that, put a vindicator. If he's taking long fangs, kill those before he can kill your demolisher. Even if he's taking 3 squads of 4 longfangs with las cannons, you'll have about 2 turns before your demolisher goes pop. behind the vindicator put lots and lots of shooty squads. and to the sides of the vindi, put some tac squads with plasma.

Good luck in your grudge match

OC FTW

my friend is a religious space wolf player and he loves to run his 20 termies every chance he gets so i know what its like to crack that nut
what i have found to work well is to simply avoid them, if you can just mount up and leave when you see his choppy stuff coming at you
generally the units in space wolves are very expensive and very speciallized so assault the shooty stuff like those frikkin long fangs and dont let you valuable dudes get slaughtered by his blood claws millions of attacks
i like to use one or more units as meatsheilds to let my more important dudes get away to keep shooting and/or counterattack
well thats just my take on the subject i hope you found it somewhat useful

If your opponent is willing to pay for Long Fangs, all the better for you.
