A regular opponent of mine took Eldrad and a Seer Council. Turn 5 rolls around and Eldrad leaves the unit. I was not aware that he could leave the unit. He ended up contesting 2 objectives. My opponent said he can leave as a Farseer allows you to take a Seer Council but not necessarily as a retinue. I allowed it as I figured he knew what he was doing. I checked the Eldar codex, FAQ and the rule book but I can't find anything to support his claim. Am I missing something or did he spin this rule?

There is no such thing as a Seer Council anymore, just a Warlock squad.

The two are never one unit, just an IC joined to a unit. Your opponent did not cheat you, rather you had an incorrect presumption based on an old codex (happens to the best of us).

yep really wish this was covered in the FAQ (hint yakface hint) i've had lots of people complain about this, even GW doesn't have a single stand point on this ... I think alot of people have trouble with the 'retinues rule' which is very non discript ... its a pain as i like to take Eldrad (or a farseer if i don't have the points) and a squad of warlocks on jet bikes.

RAW you can take a farseer and then included a squad of warlocks they both take up only one HQ slot but other then that can do what they like, as theres no mention of them being a " 'retinue', 'bodygaurd' or similar ".

only other army like this is DA ,so if you have Sammael on his jetbike (or land speeder) you can still included a command squad. Every other codex calls them body guard or retinue

Actually, if you haven't noticed every codex since the Eldar has been written this way. They seem to be moving away from retinues and towards units that characters have the option to join or leave.

So Eldar, DA, BA, Orks and (I'm guessing) the new Space Marines all don't have retinues.

I had it in the last INAT_FAQ that we wrote but the fact is, there is very little to keep it as the question only arises from people's lack of experience with new codices. As each codex is released removing retinues people will become more and more used to it.

Read the codex carefully. It says the warlocks and Farseer form one unit.

No it doesn't. It says they are a single HQ choice, nothing more. They are a separate unit by the RAW and in addition I directly asked Jervis if this was intentional at Adepticon two years ago and he assured me it was just as it is with the Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Orks and (presumably) the new Space Marines.

yep thats more or less what i'm getting half the time only reason i wanted it in a FAQ is to wave infront of people so that i'm not forced into a dice off or not alowed (flg it comes down to what the GW employ says which is no )

also i had checked the other codexs its just orks don't have hq squad units and i keep for getting the BA (i like hard copy)

You've got something better than a FAQ in this case, you've got the rules. Page 92:

"MULTIPLE UNIT CHOICES
Note that occasionally the Codexes allow the player to include several units in his army at the cost of a single force organization slot (like dedicated transports, etc). Apart from being bought as a single choice, these units operate and count as separate units in all respects."

Why are you letting a GW employee tell you the way it is?

Man, do you have to play at a GW store??

I feel for you if you do.

@: Stelek (edit to remove => :S )
no i don't have to play in a GW store but if i want a big game (4 or more people) i just don't have room ... oh and for the most part the GW people are the better players (i know i can't spend all day reading codexs and painting models ... and get paid) ... they still make huge mistakes but their only human

@:yakface
THANK YOU! I should be able to explain it now

The Seattle Battle Bunker is great to play at. So not all GW stores are places to feel bad playing at. Several of the ex employees are friends of mine, and between us, and a few more friends we've just started a warbands league to let some newbies build their armies and get some experience with the game.

On the flip side, and very strangely enough, its a lousy place to shop at. Their merchanising leaves a lot to be desired. Like the model you wanted that is out of stock. Like a useful selection of paint colors.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
