Using Inks and Washes

If anyone has seen the new SM codex there are several very well painted models in their, particularly the blue and white half or quartered ones. Now, the have some very well worked in battle damaged - understated in both quantity and the highlighting.

Any ideas how it is done. Just take a pin vice and knife to the model, paint as normal and then paint in battle damage?

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

physically damagin' the model is one option...
the other is to paint the damage...chips and scratches are easy to paint, as one doesn't have to be too careful...
