fine by me. Is the sticky-outy bit reingforced underneath the base? - if not, I suspect it will break off pretty easliy.
Why do them this way - ease of storage in your army cases?

Nice idea. The new rounded biker bases could work as well if you find that base to fragile. I never liked using the large base with two men on it so tried to fit all mine onto either 40mm rounds (heavy bolters and autocannons) or used regular bases (missile launchers). I used some extra bits to make my lascannons look they were mounted on remote turrets with targeting equipment and had a separate model standing by with the "remote" operating it.

That was my plan B in case this didn't work. Like you, I don't like the 60mil base.

Just curious, if the model didnt come with a base (None of my Praetorian guard Heavy Weapons teams did) do you HAVE to base the weapons?

You don't need to base weapon itself so much as you need to base the gunner. Keep the weapon somewhere appropriately close to the guy who is supposed to be manning it, these are not Eldar heavy weapon platforms. Since these are supposed to be man-portable heavy weapons you could even model the guys lugging the weapon if you wanted to. Just so long as you keep it very clear what type of weapon it is and who the gunner is.
The older pewter heavy weapons teams didn't have the big round bases. Only the new plastics have them.

"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that." |

Oh yes.
All of the metal IG regiments had them. Tallarn, Valhallan, Cadian, Catachan, Mordian. All had METAL crew and weapons.
Best of all, they didn't come with the stoopidz 60mm base, but generally, a 25x50 cav base and a 25mm round. All of my IG mortars are metal models (as no-one seemed to like them, so I picked up quite a few really cheap when the plastics came out ($5AUD a set).

@chromedog: I got the same type of deal. When new plastics were coming out i scooped up a great deal more of metal mortars, helped me flesh out my heavy weapon platoon.
