I'm not actually going to be participating in the Ard Boyz Tournaments (don't have the models...) but I figured, why not make a list for it and see what people think?

As a preface to comments, I'm a strong believer in More not Better as a Tyranid Philosophy, which is the reason you don't see any Barbed Stranglers or Venom Cannons. Comments are appreciated.

Huh, nothing about it to pull apart? I thought I'd at least get one person saying "not competitive." Well, no opinion means it's either good enough that it doesn't need modification or it's SO bad that you don't know where to start...

I'd drop the carapace personally and use points elsewhere but up to you. Guard spread wounds enough for 2+ save to be a minor boost. I think I'd drop the carapace and find another 40 points for more guard.

Elites - Carnifex - 2 Scything Talons, +1 WS, +1 I - 111

Don't take +1 WS and not take Miasma. I2 is nominal, better to simply hit more often instead.
Troops - 16 Termagants - 144

I'd consider going with scuttling spinegaunts instead. They can get up ahead a bit and not crowd out the big ones.
Fast Attack - 5 Warriors - Winged, Scything Talons, Rending Claws, +1 S, +1 I - 220

Huge waste personally. If you want a fast synapse element go with a winged tyrant instead of the walking one. Or just drop em and beef up the troops.

If you do use them, I'd go cheap or go for maximum damage potential. +I is not as effective anymore due to close combat changes.

Heavy Support - Carnifex - 2 Scything Talons, +1 WS, +1 I, Toxic Miasma, Bio-Plasma, Extended Carapace, Reinforced Chitin - 167

I like the tail option more then bio-plasma. Using both is even better. Again, +I is of limited use in 5ed for a carnifex especially.

You want 3 guard per tyrant. Also implant attack is something thats very usefull on them. I've killed plenty a demon prince with it.

You want scuttlers on your stealers, trust me

The gaunts are personal preference but I only used 2 squads of 14 WoN spinegaunts and they worked fine.

Miasma is much more usefull that +1 I o nthe fex's.

I agree that the tail weapons are better than bioplasma.

Winged warrior are way too many points for what they do. Raveners are potentially faster, dish out more attack, and are 20 points less for the same amount of models.

The problem with CC fex's at ard boyz was the missions. I was using an all CC nidzilla to very good effect in out of the book missions. But 2 rounds of dawn of war hurts them a lot. I took fex's with guns instead and did much better.

Where is your saviour now?

I'll be honest and say I haven't used Tyrant Guard before, so I'm not sure exactly how much good they do for a Tyrant. It's entirely possible you're right and that I have 50 extra points lying around there.

I see your point about +1WS and no miasma... I'm trying to keep these guys elite, though. I take +1 I on all my 'fexes to keep them from going simultaneously with Power Fists, more than anything else. What would you recommend I do with the remaining 8 points on the Carnifexes? Bio-plasma? Always hitting vehicles on 4+ at S10 is pretty sweet...

I haven't used Scuttling spinegaunts... I really like Without Number, I find it really, really deters people from shooting at my Gaunts. Nobody wants to kill a unit that'll just be back next turn anyway.

The Flying warriors are kind of a throw-away. I wanted more Synapse, and to have some Fast Attack in the army so that I wasn't giving an opponent a free bonus point. I gave them +1 I because I wasn't sure what else to do at that stage (they were the last unit I added) and it came the closest to filling out the roster. They have +1 S so they can glance Land Raiders.

Really, tail weapons? I never liked the idea of a weapon that I only got to use when I was fighting a lot of guys, especially since I tend to think of my Carnifexes as anti-vehicle. I can see the value of it over Bio-Plasma against infantry, but hitting cruising vehicles on a 4+ at S10 just seems like a no-brainer.

Thanks for the input!

Don't be concerned about giving your opponents free bonus points. That doesn't matter in the least for how well you do. Take what makes your army better, not what makes you opponent's after-game score worse. And if you're relying on Warrior's rending to glance LRs, you're in trouble.

Not really Relying, no, not with the 4 Carnifexes and 3 Warp Blasting Zoanthropes.

And can I get an explanation on why not boosting Initiative is a good idea? I'm not doubting, I'm just not understanding.

Consider the following:

1) The only scenario where being I2 is better than I1, is if your attacks at I2 can reduce the number of attacks you're going to take.
2) The only times that scenario will occur are: a) when there are just 1-3 enemy models left; or b) where most (all) of your opponents have powerfists (read: Terminator squads).

So, attacking at I2 addresses a couple end-cases, and doesn't alter how well he kills, only how likely he is to survive.

You can spend the points better elsewhere.
