Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I have something I call "The 2/3 rule" for Ork lists, if people want to check it out. It is based on the general multipurpose use of most Ork units. Say even a Big Mek belongs in combat at some point, or you are probably not using him right.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/218532.page

In order to make it good I would have to look at maybe 10 or so lists and look at what is actually winning, etc, etc. So it is just for fun for now.

What's the 2/3 rule? Sorry, couldn't figure out.

Orks will miss 2/3rds of their shots?

It's like ... combined arms. So Nobz with a couple Kombi-weapons are better than without. But you have to watch how many points you put into the squad.

Or say Shoota Boyz. Shoota Boyz spend 2/3 of the game shooting/ standing around, and 1/3 of the game in combat. But if they don't make it into combat they are probably wasted.

This is opposed to say a Tyranid Shooty Carnifex, Death Spitter Warriors or Zoanathropes. Or even Devourer Gaunts vs Spine Gaunts. Tyranid units tend to be used predominantly one dimensional, whereas with Orks you can be sure that many units with good shooting will see combat.

So say Orks are 2/3:1/3 shooty/close combat but Tyranids tend to be say 5/6:1/6 shooty/ combat. Or vice-versa. And Eldar and Tau tend to be one dimensional. Eldar before 18" range Dire Avengers, anyway.

To put it another way, Ork shooting is so lousy that even units that are not shooting units (like say MAN) are actually pretty good at it.

I just wanted to find a way to make Flash Gitz good. And they can be good if you use them as Nobz and get them into combat.

The other thing I was trying to decide was if it was worth it to look for opportunities to include shooting weapons such as Kombi weapons or even a squad of 3x Mekboyz 3x Burna Boyz. And I think the answer is yes. Toss in 5 or 6 Kombi weapons here and there for 30 points and you just shook a tank or flushed something out of cover.

Sorry if that sounds like common sense. Shoota Boyz and Flash Gitz are not firing platforms, in other words, unlike Lootas or Tyranid units. Likewise you can get good shooting out of Kombi-weapons and say Dreds or a couple extra Big Shootas on your Transport-wagon.

Another example is Deff Dreds. In an armour heavy list you can take a Deff Dred and use it as a firing platform. On the surface, maybe this is stupid because you should be running, Klawing and Scorching. But maybe it is worth it to get a couple shots off. You put enough Rokkits here and there and you are going to kill something with them, instead of trying to be Eldar-Orks.

Burna Boyz are a good example. Walk up shooting your Mega Blasta, when you get tired of that start Burning stuff. There you go, you got some shooting in your list. They spend 2/3 of the game long-range shooting and 1/3 of the game Burning something. If you can find them a Trukk w/ Stikkbomb Launchas you are laughing when the Burnas strike cover simultaneously.

Compare 90 points for 3x KMB + the Burnas to say 2x TL Rokkits on buggies.

I guess this "2/3" rule may apply to shooty ork armies, but for more close-combat based armies like Kult of Speed it tends to be more like a "0/3" rule where orks NEED to be in close combat to even come close to earning their points back.

yeees. Running Slugga Boyz, Lootas, Warbuggies ... these are one dimensional units.

You can put a couple Rokkits in Slugga Boyz but it may not be as worth it (at 10 points each), because the squad will be running straight at the enemy.

Sorry if it sounds obvious.

Play 30 boy mobs

3 big shootas, Nob with claw, 26 shootas.

56 shots from shootas = 18.6 hits = 9.3 wounds vs. MEQ opponents

Not bad!

It's the weight of dice thrown that gets the results.
