While the guys in a unit do not block TLOS, other models in your army do, correct??? So if you can't trace a line between the bases of the platoon in front of you, you can't shoot, unless you can see the model over the platoon's heads....

Correct. The cover rules refer to intervening units, not intervening enemy units.

If you can't trace a line between the models, you can't shoot. The bases are irrelevant for LOS.
