If you look at your codex and compare it with any other, your troops are awesome at 6pts. So one basic way to look at it is 6 troops of 30 costs you 1080 points... you have maxed your troops and you still have a good number of points for other things.
Shootas I think are slightly superior. 1. They get to shoot. 2. They get to shoot and charge. 3. 3rd edition melee is all about quick wins in hth. 4. Basic boyz are Initiative two so you have to weather all your opponents attacks (and kills) before you get your melee attacks.
The value of sluggas is that you are not too tempted to shoot you just run in and start hacking, 1 shot and a charge at best.
Take two equivalent situations:
25 boyz vs 10 marines 22" apart at the start of the game. (Fairly distant in 5th edition)
The marine goes first, shoots you with 8 bolters and a heavy bolter... you loose 4 boys.
You move 6" closer and shoot 42 shots, 16 hits, 8 wounds, 2 marines die.
He shoots you again kills 4 more boys.
You move 6" closer and shoot again 34 shots, 11 hits, 6 wounds , 2 more marines die.
He moves closer, shoots at rapid fire range and hits you with his flamer template. you lose 7 boys.
He charges you, he kills 3 more boyz. You swing back with 7 boys, 14 attacks, 7 hit, 2 wound and kill none... you run.
Slugga boys same distance
He kills 4.
You move and run for 3" now 13" away.
He kills 4.
You move and waagh for 4" then charge...
He attacks first and kills 4. You attack 13 boyz, 52 attacks, hit 26 times, wound 13, kill 4. The combat is joined.
Shootas = you lost 18 boyz and killed 4 (maybe 5 marines on average) and ran or were run down.
Sluggas = you lost 12 boyz, killed 4 and are still fighting.
I think you have to be careful with shootas to not forget you are an ork at heart and there are times when you should be running and not shooting... Slugga boyz you can be the mindless hoard. (i.e. I only shoot stuff if I am already in charge range of something.)
On the other hand your shootas and slugga boyz both averaged around 4 dead marines over the same 2.5 turns but the slugga boyz only pressure was running.
I think I would recommend a mix of boyz with maybe a 2 to 1 ratio of sluggas over shootas. However if you can roll dice like my friend and get orkie dice to roll 5s and 6s way above average.(He is almost as accurate as Imperial Guard) you can go with shoota boyz and big shootas and outshoot the marines.
I think you will find shootas work well against lower armored opponents but sluggas will put pressure on your opponent more because you have nothing better to do than run.
