doesn't look like much on paper, but when you have 30 models on the feild, and he's got 80, you don't feel so good....
The game type really killed me, as I was sporting 10 Kill points and he had 8- two of which I wasn't taking down easy.
Deployment couldn't be better, It allowed me to stay away from him for a few turns, and give the inevitable melee less rounds to hurt me.
Terrain- One Big CoD peice right in the middle, smaller ruins scattered around.
He wins the roll-off, makes me go first
I place nothing down-
He places the choppy squad in the big building and attatches his weirdboy.
Turn 1
Everything but the spiders comes on,
on the right flank, I put the 10 strong DA (Dire Avenger) squad, and the falcon (carrying fire dragons)
on the left, goes the 8 strong DA, and the serpant full of wraithguard, warlock and farseer
In the middle the two vypers.
The tanks move as far as they can, so they can fire on the orks with the most efficiency when the arrive, and the DA take cover in the closest ruins. A big part of my strategy for being outnumbered, was to deny him targets, by keeping everything in a transport, or hidden in the far corners, and moving 12 with the transports almost evey turn.
The Vypers open up with 6 str 5 ap 4 shots each, and begin the ork killing, taking out 4. I chose to engage with the vypers there, because it might cause him to waste 2 or 3 turns shooting rokkits at the vehicles, thus saving me from an ork assault.
His stuff arrives.
Lootas, and burnas and tankbustas in trukk arive on the serpant side, and the shoota boyz and the bikes on the other.
The choppa boyz move out of the cover for 2 inches, and miss their rokkits at the vypers. Everything else moved, or has short range. The weirdboy fails the psychic test, but not bad enough for the warding runes to hurt him. Austin decides to not use the weirdboy powers- as it might cause me to gain a victory point.
Turn 2 kill points- 0 to 0 tied
No spiders yet.
The Falcon smiles inside seeing the highest str ranged weapon on it's side is a big shoota, moves up 12 to see around the building, then blows the gun off the ork trukk and immbilises it, while remaining hidden from lootas.
The serpant sees lootas, moves back and begins to shoot template at the orks with weirdboy in the middle building, as the vypers move back slightly and continue fireing. About 5 or 6 drop. I begin to worry about my fate if im killing 6 or 7 a turn with all available firepower...
The bikes move forward hugging the building, the tank-bustas deploy, and head for the serpant and Vypers. The trukk fails to grot-start itself. The choppa squad continues slogging out of difficult terrain, but manages to down a vyper. The lootas measure to the serpent, and are out of range, so they run forward. The burnas move in next to the tank bustas and both run towards the serpant and DA.
Turn 3 kill points- 0 to 1 orks
The spiders are taking a break... right when i'd really like them....
The Falcon finishes the Ork Trukk off, and makes note to move away from the ork bikers ASAP. both DA squads are just hanging out in the corners, waiting for the orks.
the serpent full-o-psyker continues attacking the closest orks, as do the Vypers. they down about 6. (the mob i mow down to about 14 or 15)
Gahh! the bikes ride right into the face of the DA unit! I was expecting them to go for the Falcon. Oops. The ork shoota mob has also reached big shoota range, and the torrent of Dakka from bikes and big shootas, when combined with ork shooting meant that only 4 DA had to die. Thankfully the bikes were outside assault range. The choppa squad had exited terrain, and was about 20 inches away from the Vypers, and a good 36 from the DA + serpent in the corner. they made contact with a rokkit and downed the last Vyper. the lootas move up again, but stay in the cover. the tank bustas run again, as do the burnas. things are about to get messy- the orks are now very close.
Turn 4 kill points- 1 to 2 orks
The spiders arrive! they land back by the lootas, but a safe distance from the burnas. They blast the lootas apart- leaving only the mek.
The falcon drops the fire dragons out the back, then begins fire on the bikers, killing one with a pulse laser. the DA in that corner fire at the bikes- but needing 5's to wound really hurts.
The wave serpent drops it's cargo- and the farseer Guides and Fortunes the squad. They then open fire at the remaining orks and get their numbers down to about 8 or 9 with a nob and a Weirdboy.
The dire avengers in that corner finally open fire- and take down 9 of 10 burnas- that'll teach them to run in the open.
He strikes back hard. The bikes shoot at the 6 DA left, and kill one. Not so bad. The 3 big shootas fire- and roll 6 fives or sixes on 9 dice. I fail 5 saves, and the squad is gone. ouch...
The choppa squad fires at and charges the squad of wraithguard- unaware of how difficult it is to kill T6 models who re-roll their 3+ armour. They kill nothing from the charge. The guided and fortuned wraithguard kill 3, but the orks manage to pass their morale and stick around. The last burna moves up and catches 4 DA in a flamer template- killing 3. Armour saves not doing too hot thus far...
The Tank-Bustas blow the gun off the Wave serpent. Damn.
Turn 5 kill points- 1 to 3 orks
The spiders finish the last loota mek- (who missed last turn), and warp jump to help out the DA and Wraithguard.
The falcon moves towards the other side of the map and away from the biker nob, and takes a few out with shooting. The fire dragons step forward and blast at the bikes- leaving only 2 alive.
The dire avengers finish off the last burna. grrr.... full squad's fireing for one model.
The farseer continues to buff, while the wraithguard and their warlock kill 3 orks. The Ork nob retaliates and kills 2 wraithguard. (wtf!? failed two 3+ re-rollable armour) the other orks don't do much.
The serpent stays far away but in sight to make the tank-bustas follow it and not shoot at other troops.
The ork bikers assault the fire dragons- after missing their shots. the dragons kill the normal ork, and the nob kills one dragon. The big squad of shoota boys (still at 30 strong + warboss) has nothing to do... they begin to move towards the falcon.
The tank bustas are out of range. The melee rages out of control as both sides inflict a single wound. whoawhoawhoa!
roll a die- it's a 3! game goes on!
Turn 6 kill points- 3 to 3 tie
The spiders take down the tankbustas with no problem. The falcon moves out of any range for assault from the orks. The fire dragons loose one man, but pass morale and stay around. Noone dies from the melee combat.
The orks waaagh, and are still out of range.... to bad. The Biker nob misses 3 attacks, and i make my armour save for the other. No-one runs. The other melee has me doing 1 wound which he SAVED, and him doing nothing to me.
Roll a die- it's a 2! Game's over!
Final Score Kill points- 4 to 3 Eldar
Refection- That was a really close game, that taught me to never take small squads of eldar in 5th edition. My overall strategy worked, and allowed me to tarpit with Fortuned Wraithguard long enough to end the game. I should have put the Vypers in one squad. Oh well...
Game's Heroes- Warp Spyders- Got 2 kill points, and didn't suffer a wound.
Game's Failure- 10 man Dire Avenger squad. Killed one bike. Died from ork shooting.
