We were discussing the cheese and read the DH codex... Please tell me we were wrong.

It appears that an Inquisitor with two mystics can select anything within 12" to fire at that just deep striked unit.

However it also appears this occurs for EVERY unit that deep strikes withing 4d6" of the inquisitor he can do it again. etc. etc.

So.... Plaguebearer 1 deep strikes, DH rolls 4d6, finds Plaguebearer in range. Tells vindicator to drop pie plate on it... 8 of 12 dead.
In shock, the demon player drops another Plaguebearer... tries to back off again, Same inquisitor tells SAME vindicator to drop another pie plate. Tell me it ain't so.

Can't, because it is so.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

On the bright side, if deep strike close enough, the vindicator shot could scatter onto the inquistor.

or you drop 24" away, no luck Mr. Vindicator. But yes, it's true. double Mystic retinue = congrats vs. daemons. Well known fact, let's all applaud the 3rd ed codex and get on with our lives (bitter? me? no, why do you ask? ) Works wonders against the soon-to-be proliferate drop-pod armies, if it's a triple las predator, or land raider, las/plas squad, or anything that can smash open the drop pods on arrival. My best counter to this is throw (a) soul grinder(s) down approx. 30" away, then battle cannon that inq. off the table. At least the 2nd half of your army won't get popped to pieces by the mystics. Unless he's chucked in a land raider, which they usually are.

PS it's just as painful, though doesn't appear as cheesy when it's a Grey Knight squad full of psycannons and/or incinerators. Or 10 Sternguard. Or even the inq retinue itself, chock full of plasma cannons and all that. Or.... well, you get the idea

And if you have an Inquisitor with two mystics standing next to a Leman Russ Demolisher, You can have that pieplate shoot at every unit he detects.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

they're actually not Regwon. Just the one unit does the job, and any space marine, imperial guard, witch hunter, or daemon hunter army can bring it. So technically all of those armies are supremely good at killing daemons. question is, how many people are going to regularly field the double mystic inquisitor retinue? my guess, not all that many.

At 32 points for the combo (add LD10 psychic hood for 36 more points), about the only reason an army shouldn't is if it needs the Elite slot for something else.

elite inquisitors can only get ld9 hood...

The real question is whether a vehicle can pivot to fire at incoming deep strikers if nominated by a mystic to shoot...turning doesnt count as movement...

It also gets to fire at a PER UNIT basis, not an individual model by model basis as in the original poster's description. Only once per the entire plaguebearer unit.

Another question is whether the mystics can shoot at both or only one combat squadded drop podding units if they split after they deep strike. Current rules let the mystics shoot at either the drop pod or the dropping squad, im going to say 90% chance they will FAQ it to only let mystics shoot at one of the combat squadding units after they split up upon landing. (if they even FAQ that issue)

The Vindicator could still do its job to some extent since it can place the hole anywhere over the Drop Pod!

Combat Squad or not, both of the squads could be hit!

RogalDorn wrote:I disagree with this tactic working against Drop Pod armies. I don't think the Tactical Squad inside would be the ones targeted by any shooting. What technically is deep striking is the Drop Pod itself. The Tactical Squad busts out just like getting out of a transport. Nowhere does it state that the Tac Squad deep struck, but they suffer the downsides of it.

On the other hand, the Vindicator could still do its job to some extent since it can place the hole anywhere over the Drop Pod!

Check out the DH FAQ. Shots can be at the Drop Pod or the disembarking unit (but not both).

yak, do you think mystics can enable vehicles to pivot on the spot to fire at deep striking units? Do you think they will limit combat squadding from drop pod space marines to one mystic shot at either combat squad, shoot both combat squads, or shoot before they split the squad?

I tried to edit that post out, because I thought to myself "I didn't check the FAQ on this one, at all".

Your too quick on the trigger for me, yak.

Why would they be able to?

Do you think they will limit combat squadding from drop pod space marines to one mystic shot at either combat squad, shoot both combat squads, or shoot before they split the squad?

I haven't been able to look at the SM codex wording enough to be able to answer that question.
