Sun Tzu's The art of war and Clauswitz? not sure on the spelling of his name it's been a long while. Some of the auto/biography's on Caesar and Hannibal are great reads also.

Harold Lambs Genghis Khan or any of his fictional histories are great reads also. I just finished Igguldson's series on Caesar and although not a 100% historically accurate had great fight scenes thru out all the books and gave some great insights into Roman warfare and how they utilized infantry blocks and calvalry.

Anything with Boyd's OODA loop. He never wrote his own book about it, but there's plenty of people who go on at length about it.

Clausewitz is ok, it's very dense reading. A better read, I think, is 'Strategy: the Indirect Approach' by Basil Liddell Hart, who is less concerned with 'grand strategy' than Clausewitz, and provides lots of solid historical data that backs up his main point.

Well, if you want a great military history with strategy/tactics lessons, you want "War Through the Ages" by Lynn Montross. Since 40K forces use a mishmash of tactics from different ages (ancient skirmish CC troops up to flying MBTs), this book is a great multi-level primer for the game. It used to be required reading for American Officer's Candidate School (not sure if it still is). It will also give you inspiration for cool conversions based on old weaponry, no doubt.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!
