alright so I played a drop pod army for ard boys and I didn't win a single game. but because of the power I was able to concentrate I tied 2 of the 3 and only lost the third because of dice (a few marines dropped and 2 squads ran) and the biggest problem I had was a unit that could help me knock his force back.

I ran 4 drop pods 2 had 2 meltaguns sarge with combi melta, other had the plasma equivilant.
2 vindicators, crusader, assault termi's and chaplain.

sternguard have so many ability's that they can fire through your guys and ignore cover, hit high toughness models where other bolters would be wasted (and their special weapons have to take it out).

their the swiss army marine, and I can see them being effective at range but really shinning in drop pod assault. where marines really needed something...

what other ideas have you come up with using these new vets?

A gun is a medium, a bullet a brush.

I am by no means any kind of expert marine tactician, but I had considered using a smaller squad of 6 Sternguard in a Razorback. Seems like their swiss army bolters would be quite useful even in smaller sizes like that, and putting them in a Razorback would give them mobility and some extra firepower without actually having one of them exchange a swiss army bolter for a special or heavy weapon. They wouldn't actually assault anything, just hop out of the Razorback and blaze away at the target.

Maybe not the best thought out plan, but it might work.

I like the name "swiss army bolters". Hopefully Turn Signals on a Land Raider does a comic based on that concept...
