1250 pts. I played orks. Black Templars handled me like I was a training dummy.
I brought mad doc grotsnik, 3x30 slugga, 3 killa kans, 1 deff dread, and 3 zzap guns (yeah they stink).
He had 2 skimmers, 2 rhinos, 2 squads and 2 assault squads (I'm unsure of the specifics of his list). His leader had a special ability in CC that allowed him to engaged and kill Doc Grotsnik fast (the stupid ork needed to make 1 of 3 5+ invuln. saves to survive and didn't have it in him).
Lessons learned:
1) I should buy some of the SM codices because I'm clueless when it comes to the advantages, nuances of the various chapters.
2) Based on previous battles I've had become overconfident about the abilities of CC orks. I need to take my time in deployment and make use of terrain etc...
3) the points I spent on the zzap would have been better spent on a warboss.

How about some details about how the game went, or what kind of game it was?
Deployment? Mission? Table layout?

Mission: annihilation. Deployment: pitched battle. table: 4'x6' very little terrain, one corner separated by fordable river (diff. terrain). Orks (me) went first. I deployed 2x30 boyz squads on the right and one 30 boyz squad on the left across the river. He deployed in a corner which forced my dread and 1 squad to walk/run a long time to get in the action.

Turn 1:
Orks:
Everyone heads toward the marines. Kans shot KMBs with no effect!
Marines:
He drives two rhinos up and pops out, shoots right orks and kills 7 or 8. I think, "i've got him on assault!" His two skimmers kill 6 orks in right-hand mob.
Turn2
Orks
zzaps move again, left orks and dread move/run. right ork squad hits two squads of marines in assault. Pistol shots killed 2 and then the orks lose the assault in spectacular fashion. They are below 'mob rule' threshold and are wiped.
Kans shoot and do nothing but are in assault range for t3. HQ squad also in assault range for next turn.
Marines
He assaults both kans and HQ orks. His commander does the special ability to single out my HQ and kills grotsnik. No FNP for 30 boyz now :(. 1/2 orks die, 2-3 marines. Kans do better.
Turn3
Orks
Deff dread can now shoot, misses. zzaps kill 2 marines. CC doesn't go my way. other squad wiped. kans look good though.
marines
1 rhino/squad are coming for zzap guns. skimmers hammer more orks. Kans win in CC.
Turn 4
orks
surviving kan and last ork mob assault rhino. explosion kills 2 marines and 4 orks.
marines
zzzap guns wiped. he shoots the hell out of ork mob and then assaults it with the squad that disembarked from the exploded rhino. last ork mob wiped. assault squad hits deff dread and get 3 melta bomb hits. boom.

Metagame, a maligned term I know. Size of armies, amount of terrain on board, board size, nature of terrain, who positions terrain-all variables. This case, you are playing a small game on a BIG board. His army is mobile, your army is, not. A couple of trucks and things may have worked to your favor. Opponent probably played well to chew up one unit without getting wiped by another.
Low initiative is a problem that smetimes a good Waagh can't even solve.

I've been lurking in the forums for a while now. This is my first post! I've been playing Orks extensively for several months and one thing I will swear by for a successful Ork army is getting your boyz cover saves. Use grots or vehicles or buildings but do whatever it takes to get that 4 up cover.
I can't tell if the boyz were getting cover saves based on your report but if you position your boyz behind the Kanz unit and spread the Kanz 4 inches apart (vehicle coherency limit) you are able to shoot through the kans while simultaneously granting your boyz cover. This makes a 30 man ork boy unit resilient and you can advance and take limited casualties leading up to an assault.

Also, go with shoota boyz with rokkits. It's funny watching marines' faces when you open up with some 180 shots at 18" away and just keep firing as they come in, before you move, shoot again, then charge what's left.

My opinion - Nobz with a Painboy will do wonders for you. Get these guyz in a trukk. Make sure some of the Nobz have PKs. Then see if you do better. Ditch the Zapp Guns to help you get the points for above mentioned unit. Enjoy!

ehh i agree to a point with the nobs. nobs are serious hard asses in CC. give them a waagh banner and big choppas. sure power klaws double your STR and ignore armor saves.... but when facing SM in CC you really need to lvl the playing field the best you can. if you use big choppas, you get a 6 for STR which means on normal marines you roll 2+ for wounds. AND with the WAAGH banner your nobs are at WS5 which means you roll 3+ to hit on a normal marine. with the furious charge your at the same initiative so your attacks go at the same time. (for the first assault that is) thats what i do on SM, that does major damage to normal marines. theres just a TON of hits and the wounds are super easy. sure they get saves unlike with PK but the beauty part is, they cant save from all of them. with PK they go last and your at risk of losing attacks which screws you when fighting SM.
just try a few different ways out and see what works

ive been playing for 6 months or so now i play on average 5 times a week and i usually play against marines my list is 2 warbosses power klaw waaagh banner 10 nobz for each with a trukk and big choppas 140 slugga choppa boyz 6 deffkoptas with power weapons i know it seems basic but it smashed a friend of mines black templars in 4 turns on annialation and i belieave his words at the begining of the game were "how am i supposed to kill all of that?"
