Both pictures are conversion beamers. For whatever reason all the old metal ones were done in the style of the first picture while the plastic ones were done just like the second picture. I think the second one is more distinctive when put side by side with other imperial weapons. I believe they changed the look because the metal ones looked too much like plasma cannons.

If you're gonna convert one to do look like the first picture use a plasma cannon as a starting point.

If you're gonna convert one to look like the second one I'd recommend the cannon arm off a Necron destroyer as a starting point.

As aka_mythos says, BOTH are conversion beamers.

The first one is RT vintage, and shared elements from the other heavy weapons (like the Multi-melta).

The second one is from Space crusade (and consequently 2nd ed - the chaos heavy weapons sprue had one as well.)

I had the same idea for the MoF Conversion beamer - necron destroyer weapon, but I was going to replace the flamer on the servo arm with it.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Build your own how you wish, the only thing to note is that it is heavy weapon size, and is not a seperate artillery piece like the Thunderfire.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

One thing to note for you Chromedog, is that the Conversion Beamer replaces the Servo-harness. So a Tech Marine with a conversion beamer doesn't even have a servo-arm.

Many a Sentinel pilot has hesitated to call his vehicle a walking coffin after battling beside a Dreadnought.

Do you mean Advanced Space Crusade? Or was it from one of the space crusade expansions?

The conversion beamer is a rogue trader weapon. Funny story that: the thing was in the Wargear book for 2nd ed, but it wasn't on anyone's equipment options. I mean, it existed in the rules, but no one could use one in game.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
