I can't seem to nail a good colour scheme for my Orks. I toyed with Goffs, but I'm sick of black models. Evil Suns doesn't work because the reds can be hard to get right sometimes. I'm debating between Bad Moons and Deathskulls, and because I have so many melee units, it doesn't seem very fluffy to play as the former, who are traditionally a dakka army. So, could I have some help on doing the blue on Deathskull armour plates and war paint?
Also, I need help with skin tones. I think a good one would be Orkhide shade basecoat, then a layer of Knarloc Green, then a wash of Thraka green.
Thanks in advance.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'm currently doing an Ork army and am including models from each of the standard bands, along with a couple of my own invention. I like the thought of loads of orks all ganging together under a common cause. Just my take on it....

Your idea about the skin tones is a good one, I used it on mine for a while with an additional highlight step after the wash, but I actually found something that works better(actually I was shown). If you paint the skin graveyard earth, and highlight up with a mix of graveyard earth and bleached bone, then give it a heavy wash of thrakka green, it gives an interesting look to the model.
When I do the blue on my boyz I generally use regal blue, wash with azuraman blue, then hit it with 50/50 regal and enchanted, with a final highlight of enchanted.

Mine are orkhide, knarloc and goblingreen (the foundation greens). No Wash. Looks quite good on the table and more realistic (as far as that is possible) then the GW bright green orks...
For a few pics see my signature. There is a link to my slow blog in there. Feel free to comment too (Again a shameless try to get viewers and comments on my blog )

I used catchcan green, then gretchin green for highlights then I'II be using the new mud wash
As others have mentioned, the darker colour looks more realistic than the bright green.

Realistic to what? How do you know what colour Ork skin will be in 38,000 sodding years?
Nice bright greens rock as far as I'm concerned, with plenty of dirt on. All these earthy greens though, and pale gobbo type colours, your poor Orks just look ill. No one's going to be intimidated by an Ork with a touch of the sniffles

Well, this weekend, I'm going to be experimenting with Ork skin tones. I've been using Tester's enamels rathern than GW's paints, which are hella expensive at the hobby shop. From base coat to highlights, I've been using:
Dark Green - 1:1 Dk. Green/Green - Green
What I want to try this weekend is:
4:1 Olive Drab/Black - Olive Drab - 4:1 Olive Drab/White
As for armor and clothing, why not try going with generic clothing? According to the fluff, there are tons of Orks not affiliated with any clan. Generic hardscrabble "homeless guy" colors (dingy greys, drabs, browns, faded or subdued hues) would be good for that.

This would be a better topic for the regular modeling forum. Gonna send it that way!

I am still thinking about skin colour of mine orcs.
But colour scheme what i use is mine own. I just don't like pure black, to many red or yellow. Deathskulls are fun because they are only partially blue.
If you don't want codex colours use your own. There is plenty of orkz tribes and clans out there. In codex there is only the biggest.
