Greetings.
Name is Jimmy, WGXH is just an online tag, refer to me as either. Nice to see a friendly community.
I am just starting up 40k with a friend who is playing Imperial Guard- I find myself torn between Chaos Space Marines, Space Marines, and Orks. Any advice on the matter would be appreciated.
and thanks for reading in advance.

Welcome to Dakka Jimmy
There is no wrong choice. Take your time, read the codexes, look at the models each has to offer and then decide which one suits you best.

Thanks for the quick reply and sage advice.
Admittedly I have all 3 codexes, and the Assault on Black Reach set. I simply am torn between the Space Marines superior armour and vehicles(and thus it goes for Chaos also) and the simple hilarity of the Orks.

Well, its a tough decision. I play SM, CSM, DE and Eldar, but no horde army like Orks as I hate painting all those models. And by the way, Orks are ugly.

Welcome to dakka.
SMs are great all round troops and very forgiving, they are a great beginners army.
Orks are one of the more powerful lists at the moment, but as wuesenfux points out, there is a lot to paint.

Painting isn't really a problem as such- though I have little artistic ability on the whole, I seem to do..well...reasonably well with the miniatures. I somply cannot decide between the brutality and subsequent hilarity of the Orks to the more user friendly Marines. and the vehicles too. Vroooom.
and I'm sure wuesten, you are ugly to the Orks also. =P

Well you have black reach. Add a tactiqal squad to make a nice 500 point marine army. Add a few trukks and PK-nobs to the orks and make them 500 pts. Play a few games and see what you like... Alternatively add 20 boys and the nobs (no trukks) to get a horde feeling in 500 points...
Whatever you choose the imps of your mate are not going to be happy...
Good luck painting and playing

Hey Jimmy, I am a fellow noob on here. I have been playing 40k for some time now though. My suggestion and rule of thumb is to mostly go by whichever has the models you like best. When it comes to strategy and army lists, many races can be tailored in a way you like, especially Marines. However, I find that people who are not into the aesthetic of an army will generally get bored with it fast.
That's the polite answer. The real man's answer......Orks.

....or even better, go the Humorisk route and get all three. Then for variety's sake, maybe some Eldar and Tyranids, maybe some Tau. At that point, you've come so far you might as well get a few fantasy armies to balance things out. You'll be needing the proper books for all these armies, of course. Then there's Lord of the Rings....

Ho ho ho. My pockets may be deep, but there is a limit for 'em.
Me wants a car, and I'm already paying for Xmas in the household.
