any ideas on this, I was looking at tyranids and contemplating how great it would be to have them match real insect patterns and looking up beetles, there are many with cool blue or green iridescence, any hints or tips to produce a similar effect?

There is something called Iridescent Medium for acrylics and other paints. Just mix that into your acrylic paint and youll get a iridescent effect. Not sure if itll look like a beetle though...

try -
directly over a black base coat, layer thin washes of different inks - if you can hold of the old GW ones these are best. blue & green work best with red coming third. do different colours in different areas & build up in layers. it won't photo well but is effective when held in the hand in sunlight.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Look for interference paints. Golden makes them, available at fine arts stores. They have an interference pigment that looks one color and shifts to another as your angle of view moves. On darker colors, the interference shade (the shift-to color) stands out more and over lighter shades, the shift is more dramatic. Lots of different colors available.

To achieve that insect-like look, use a combination of base color and 2 interference colors. Paint the first interference shade in one direction, then the next shade should be painted at a perpendicular angle to the first. That way, the model will have a base coat that's accented by two different colors, say blue and green.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

There are also spray paints used for model hot-rods that change color depending on the angle that you look at them. I don't know the name of the manufacturer, but you should be able to get them at any hobby shop that stocks parts for those kinds of kits.

The spray paint was Mystique, but I can't find it anymore in hobby stores. I get the same thing by Duplicolor in auto supply places. Brand name is Mirage. My necrons are blue/purple and my eldar are magenta/gold. The also have green/silver.

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

My Stealth suits change color as well as my bfg ships for chaos.... they change depending on the direction light hits them. Is this what you mean?
