Subject: Kind of noob-ish Ork questions

Hello, all!
I have some questions that require answers. I've already scanned the forums using the handy "search" feature, and found no specific answers to my questions. So, I hope that the fine folks here can help. Mostly, they pertain to modelling, but they specifically are concerns about models as they relate to official game rules.
1.) If I have a legal, official Games Workshop model, can I modify that model with non-GW material to make a legal, codex-sanctioned upgrade? For example, can I retool and paint some leftover sprue material and other scavenged bits to make a "bosspole" or "WAAAUGH! banner" for a legal, GW-manufactured Ork Nob?
2.) If the codex says that I may upgrade one model in an Ork Boy mob into a Nob, does that mean I have to use an official Nob model, or can I simply pay the points and mod the Boy figure so that it is bigger, more armored, or otherwise more Nob-looking, so that it can be counted as the mob's nob?
3.) If the codex says that I may take one mob of Ork Boyz (troops) in my army and upgrade them into 'Ard Boyz (armored troops), do they neccessarily need to be GW-manufactured 'Ard Boys? I checked the GW website, and I see no sign of official 'Ard Boyz models, or "Bitz" for conversions being offered. (I have been told, though, that such things were offered in the past.) Can I still have my 'Ard mob if I fashion some 'Ard Armor of my own and mod up a regular Boyz mob?
4.) Lastly, and on a slightly different note, which would be a more successful option to give to my Warboss:
- 'Eavy Armor for a 4+ save
- Cybork Body for a 5+ invulnerable save
- Both? Is that allowed, for a 4+ invulnerable save?
Thanks for your time and input, guys. It would really help me out.

1. you can mod any model to look as pretty as you want, you can use spare bits from anything.
2.you can just outfit your boy to look more ugly like to be the Nob.
3. There are no 'Ard boy mods out right now, you just have to use spare bits you get with boys to make them look like they have 'Ard armor. (I used the extra plates from trukks to outfit all my 'Ard boys)
4. You can not have 'Ard armor AND cybork, have to pick one or the other. Personal I find 'Ard better used for a larg unit of boys, having 30 boys runnin at you with +4 save is a lot scarier then 30 runnin at you with +6.

1.) yes that's the half the point of converting
2.) yes again mod your heart out
3.) you realize your 1st three questions are all the same pretty much
4.) both but that would give him a 4+ save and a 5+ invulnerable save. which means he gets a 4+ save against anything AP 5,6 or - and a 5+ inv save against anything AP 1-5

1-3 - in some tourneys go can even use bitz from other companies (up to about 25% i think - you'd need to check with who ever is running a tournament - stores are usually lenient).
if you look at some older (winning) golden demon awards, parts from WW2 tanks are clearly evident, for example.

In all cases, scratch built modifications to GW models are fine. It's when you use parts from other model manufacturers where problems may arise, and even then, not often. There is never a compulsion to use only GW's exact official model for a unit, especially if such a model doesn't exist. So long as it's clear to your opponent what model represents what, then it's fine.

yea scratch build, mod what ever it doesnt matter man. as long as whoever you are playing with can clearly SEE that its a nob and not just a random boy.
as for the Ard boyz just get some for sale signs and use them as plasti-card, cut up some rectangles, glue them on for shoulder pads, and put some rivets on them. presto they are ard boyz.
and you can use BOTH bork body and eavy armour. thats actually a smart choice for a warboss, because he can easily shrug off normal attacks, but when something hard hitting comes his way, you have that 5+ invulnerable to rely on.

Thanks, everybody!
You've all been extremely helpful. I really appreciate your help with the modeling rules, since I'm so new to the game. I'll snap some pics of my Ork army soon.

as to what alex wrote...... yea thats kindda true. you ALMOST can never rely on them. id say, rely on them to fail, that way when it DOES work you really freak out and then rub it in everyones face that it worked

Not a big fan of the Cybork body as yeah, you only save 1/3 of the time on a lone model. Seems to make more sense if you are paying for it over a unit that way you are utilizing it from time to time. Though with the new paindoc cyborks rule I will probably rarely use it. I almost ALWAYS rolled with a doc and cybork retinue back in the way because they were all str 4 and toughness 5 with that 5+ inv save for just a fraction more than a regular boy. Hardly anybody cared to shoot that truck up until it was too late.
