I've been waiting for the plastic drop pods for a while.. and now with the new rules there's so many units that can take them because GW designed it that way to sell the new model..

a regular unit of 10 tactical marines would be over 200 pts, 225 or so with upgrades. What if I just did something like 4 tac squads, command squad, a dreadnought or 2, maybe some deep striking terminators, or deep striking landspeeders. I already have all the models except the pods...

Would an army like that be fun to play? or play against? Would it be way too cheesey? or too undependable?

undependable, but against daemons it could be amusing to say the least.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

i wouldnt say that at all. As long as everything is in drop pods it is just like a deamon army except no fear of deap strike mishaps. Plus you can combat squad when you get out. Dreadnoughts are dropped by tanks and fire a melta at it to destroy it.
Drop Pod armys are a blast to play and very tacticale. You can isolate parts of your opponets army and your units are so durable they can take a turn of fire before they get stuck in. And they put out a good bit of fire as well, so they hurt when they all double tap into some orcs. Do it up man, Drop Pods Rock!

I've come to the conclusion that its best to keep the pod cheep. Just the Pod, maybe the beacon, but only if you have other DS units.

Also due to the wording that vehicles that DS are counted as moving at crusing speeds, and the fact that the drop pod is not a fast vehicle it can never shoot the Deathwind launcher on the turn it lands. Since it only has a 12" range, it would not be that hard for the enemy to get out of range of it after landing. Seems like a perfectly wasted oppertunity to me. I was going to take a DW launcher on all my pods, but now, I'm thinking those 80-100 points could be better spent on something else.

The only downside of a drop podded army is that is rather immobile after landing. To get around this, careful planning of the landing zones is needed.

Locator beacons can help with that, so scout bikes can help with the initial drop and beacons off the initial drop pods can guide the remainder. If you need to get fancy, that's when it gets dicey.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Don't be too enthusiastic about the possibilities drop pods offer. I played a drop podded army supported by deep striking Termies and Tornados at several occasions. Such an army struggles against top tier lists like Chaos or mech Eldar.

I don't do tournaments, and very few of the people in my club are very competitive.. which is prolly why we like Apocalypse so much.. So I doubt I'll ever be up against any kind of "top tier" army. I just want a fun list so I was thinking the unpredictable nature of having everything in the army deep strike could be a fun twist.

Since we need more troops these days I'm guessing I would want 3-4 tac squads, 1 command squad, and then fill up the rest of the points with anti-tank kind of stuff like a couple dreads with multi meltas or lascannons. And maybe a thunderfire cannon just cuz it looks cool. i don't think I would take heavy weapons in the tac squads though since my guys would be moving around, they prolly wouldn't get to shoot them. I was thinking maybe a devastator squad but they also have to stand still so I wouldn't get any shots with them till at least turn 3... they could end up being pretty ineffective.

I have been toying with the idea of a drop pod list with six dreadnoughts and 9 or so speeders.

All the troops would be scouts and they would just sit around and hold objectives while the dreds do all the killing.

In all the playtests of the list is freaking rocks. I have yet to lose with that kind of list as 6 dreds popping up in your face at any giving time is awesome.

By all means play drop pods. They are a blast to play and play against and they make for a very fun game.

the only problem with that list is that half your drop pods are not on the table, therefore an ememy can focus fire at the dreads or scouts that are there.
