I have never played a power army before. My 3 as one can see from my signature are IG, Orks, and Skaven. It seems uncomfortaable having models this expensive and frankly I am not sure what to do. I Know that this army needs anti tank. Also a way to get Calgar into battle.

I was trying to decide between:
3 land speeders with Multi meltas
4 Lascannon devastator squad
3 Lascannon predator
terminator squad with chainfists

These will fill the vehicle killing role. However its cuts on point to get calgar there like I said. Here is my list. Any help would be appretiated.

HQ
Calgar with Armor of antiochus
Honor guard w/ 1 additional member, 1 thunderhammer, chapter banner and power weapons
(I want some kind of xport but don't know what)

Troops
3 x 5 man squad tac squads, Sgt w/ power weapon
3 x 10 man squads, w/ flamer, sgt w/ power fist & melta bombs, DROP PODS

Heavy Support
2 x Thunderfire Cannons

Total 1675 (I am trying to make a 2000 point list, not sure what else to add)

Thanks,

those 3 5 man squads look pretty silly to me, especially since they are only power weapons on the sergeants, not fists, think about this, for two of those squads, the base cost before buying anything is 180 points, but a 10 man tac squad is 170. For 10 points less you get 1 less sergeant and so 1 less power weapon, but you get the 15 points for that power weapon back and then can take a free flamer and heavy bolter/multi melta/missile launcher. I cant imagine what role 4 marines and a power weapon sergeant without a transport are filling that wouldn't be improved by those weapon options.

also, between the honour guard, marneus calgar, and whatever transport you end up getting them, you could cut them out of your list for 2 land raiders, or something of equal value. I just feel that there aren't enough targets to justify that much point value into 5 models that are no tougher to wound than terminators, And the honour guard don't even have the invuln save.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Hmm, Originally the 5 man squads were supposed to sit back and claim. I did feel that they were a bit vulnerable though. So I suppose that 2 ten man squads would be better. I will probably do that.

Also, do I take it that Calgar is considered a bad choice by most.

I have heard most people think the thunderfire is awsome. I have not tried it myself so far though. Perhaps I will cut it down to one.

Any other recommendations?

Thuderfires are good but I think that most of the time they should be used singly. A Thunderfire is very weak against almost any form of attack directed against it, so you need to ensure that the enemy doesn't engage it. The best way to do this is to put other more threatening units on the table, such as vindicators or land raiders. Most enemies will decide to engage those targets instead which should allow your Thunderfire to operate relatively unscathed.

Hmm. So perhaps only one Thunderfire. So I have decided to drop calgar and go with two chapter masters. Or one Cm and a CPT.

I take it people do not really like honor guard.

I was gonna include some (stern)guard I believe it was. The guys that can assault when they DS. but it was just too expensive.

So I think I will go with 4 tac squads of 10 and 1 scout squad of 10 with telion and a HB.

What are some good anti tank options?

London (work) / Pompey (live, from time to time)

drop a thunderfire and 1, 5 man squad.

turn the last 2, 5 man squads into a tac squad.

add 2 land raiders.

give calgar one as a transport and a 2nd one to shoot most things that need to die.
also adds some heavy anti-tank.

Toyed around with Marneus list when I got the book. I am thinking 2500 point lists or don't think about it. His benefits are just too costly.

Personally, I would look at a captain maybe even Sicarius. Captains don't get honor guard but they qualify for a command squad and that means feel no pain for the squad (and the presumed attached captain).

I do like the idea of 5 10-man tacticals. In objectives games, you can combat squad them. In KP games you keep the KPs minimized.

At this point you have about about 1000 points locked into your core.

Now it is how you want to skin your opponent... troop-based? Vehicles? How specialist do you want to go? I think you will find a fully outfitted command squad will give you one good hard-hitting HTH unit so then it is your choice of vehicles, jump packs, terminators, etc.
I will say the captain and command squad will draw fire so some form of transport would probably be wise.

For your second HQ consider a librarian. They are so improved now and the psychic powers can be used to cover a hole in your army lists.

Drop pods are probably going to be the flavor of the month but assuming you drop pod the whole thing, we are talking 275 points. That is a full stern guard or a landraider.

Or you could do the unthinkable... actually field a fluff battle company. You would need 1 more tactical squad, 2 assault squads and 2 devastator squads.

I dunno, it looks very... flimsy. I don't get the point of using so many Land Speeders. A unit of Lootas could drop those 3 in a single round of shooting. 180p gone. Those 530p can get you 2 Land Raiders! And then as ihockert said, you could get some shots out of the Thunderfire, tho I wouldn't count on it.

If you want to use Speeders, I'd take Storms, and put scouts with PF on them. Give them (Storms) flamers and go kamikaze. I dunno

And the captain... Aren't there better IC HQ choices available? Sicarius for example? Heck if you want cheap for a small list, Cassius is pure pwn (T6, FNP, +4 inv) at 125p. No command squad but so what.

If you run an assault vehicle then the transported unit should be a tough cc unit. But it isn't.
The capacity of the LRC is wasted if non-Termies are transported.

WEll one thing that im worried about it not having enough shots for a horde army and not having enough anti tank for a vehicle heavy army. What would you recommend for some good anti tank stuff.

Also for a high amount of shots.

I will look at cassius

For horde you want templates, not so much a lot of shots, because templates will go thru the unit cover (4+) and the shots won't. The best way is giving flamers to your assault troops or any other stuff that's gonna go close. LR Redeemer (240p) is a very nice horde killing machine for example. Assault squads with flamer are nasty. Combi-flamers are nice too.

For AT I dunno what's the norm but combi-melta Sternguard on drop pods are killy killy.

People will hate my list, because of the points in my HQ's, but I've run Marneus and Tigurius together since second edition, and Tigurius- not Kantor- was the most recent Damned witness.

In my recent 2500point games (often just to feel out the new units) I ran:

Marneus
Tigurius

5 Sternguard 1 w/combimelta
w/Razorback
5 Assault Termies 3LC, 2THSS
w/LRC + Multi-melta + Chronus
5 Termies, 1AC
w/Land Raider

1 10man Tac, Flamer, ML
1 10man Scout, Snipers all around + Telion

1 TF Cannon
5 Devs, 2LC 2ML
5 Devs 2HB, 2PC?

I was able to run Marneus, and Tigurius up one side with the Assault Termies, and Sternguard.. Deep Struck the Shootinators in using Marneus's beacon.. all that shooting plowed through a couple squads of little bugs, he shifted his flyrant and one fex over, which the Assault Terminators were able to kill with a couple casualties... TH vs Flyrant worked wonders on a multi-assault while Marneus and the LC's took down the Fex... piled in to the already engaged flyrant going at I1 due to the hammer.

Unfortunately his other little bugs were able to reach my scouts and tac squad on my objective, but not before I took out all his synapse in that table quarter... and nothing he had on that quarter was touching the LR contesting that objective. Downside is I tried to move too slow to load up the tac squad and traverse the field to his objective, so I won the "moral" victory on VP/KP.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
