wait wait wait wait... huh..?

So I've been wondering, what are base paints? I've heard of brands, such as Vallejo and stuff, but what are they? What is their purpose? And do they fulfill their purpose?

Thanks for the comments

well first off they are the base coat, it covers the mini or model so that the rest of the paint you put on will have some perfect to stick to. but also base coating does more then provide a good surface for paint. it can fill in small imperfections AND change the hue of the paints you put on. if you want a REALLY vibrant red or yellow, base coat the mini white. or if you want to dull it down base it grey or even black.
as for brands it depends on who you talk to. personally i think it depends on the person. i try lots of different things that are cheaper. ive found paints that work every bit as good as GW but half the cost or more.
