So is Typhus and a squad of plague marines the best set up for single HQ and troop choice?? or is there something better.
My son and I have been debating this question, points are not the object, it is basically if you could build an HQ choice and one box of Troops what would be best?
Last time I tried this Tyranids did okay, but what good combos are out there.

the best troop choice is a full guard platoon and one guard hq slot

Well, Typhus is good at taking on ICs and infantry because of his ability to automatically pass when using his psyker powers, and the option to use his force weapon if his attack doesn't kill the target. The Plague Marines are good because they're bastards to kill and can put up a decent fight. Noise Marines might be a good match-up because they can just decimate light infantry. Thousand Sons can be good too if you're up against MeQs. Abbadon has the power to kill whatever he touches, so he might be good if Typhus doesn't do so well. A combo like this I would use is an Ork Big Mek for the HQ and a Deff Dread for the Troop choice. The Dread is normally Heavy Support, but the Big Mek allows him to be taken as a Troop choice. Given the option, I'd fully kit both of them out. Farsight Council might be better since you get 8 Battlesuits (thats including Farsight) as one HQ, then get lotsa Fire Warriors.

A tooled up Farseer with 10 warlocks all on jetbikes. 8 Destructors.
Then 10 Guardian Jetbikes/10 Wraithguard.
The Jetbikes compliment the HQ better but 10 Wraithguard is worth more points.

I like the Imperial Guard HQ/Troop selection.
Firebase?
HQ:
Command Squad (las/plas if you want)
2 3-gun heavy bolter squads
3 lascannons
another las/plas command squad, or whatever.
5 las/plas infantry platoons
10 lascannons, 7 plasmaguns, 3 heavy bolters. obviously you can mix and match heavy/special weapons, not to mention tooling out the command squads.
or just mechanize them, so it's the above, plus 7 chimeras.
hell, IG can field a 1000+ point army with 2 force org slots.
EDIT: sorry, the command platoon is 0-5 support squads, so make that 2 lascannon squads, 2 heavy bolter squads, and 3 deep striking heavy flamer sentinels.

A Warboss and a squad of Nobz with a Painboy (one such unit counts as troops) is one of the toughest units in the game.

I think Farsight and 7 battlesuit bodyguards would make a nice HQ, but they don't have a very competative troops choice

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Well, 10 Wraithguard led by a Warlock with conceal and a Farseer with fortune is a tough nut to crack.

Biker Warboss with 10 nob bikers with a good mix of klaws, big choppas, kombi flamers and a painboy as mentioned is one of the toughest combos of an HQ and a troops (warboss lets 1 Nobs squad be troops) unit especially if its set up to abuse wound allocation. It also cost in the 700 point range but its T4(5), 2 wounds, 4+ armor, 5+ invuln, 4+ cover and FNP that can turbo boost, beat up just about anything it charges and actually has decent shooting too.
There are a few armies that can really mess up Typhus and a squad of plague marines, Demons have the 3 flamer suicide squad (this messes up pretty much everyone tho) the land raider redeemer has those really fun S6 AP3 flamers (I wound on 3s, you get FNP) as well as any S8+ AP3 or better ordinance weapon. Anyone with Eternal Warrior is now immune to the ID on Typhus's force weapon so Calgar and Lysander would both kill him if they get one unsaved wound. Its not to say that Typhus and a squad of plague marines aren't tough, because they are, however best is a bit up to debate. All of the things noted that would mess up Typhus also mess up the Bike squad too howver.

Space Marine Command squad with Stormshields Melta guns and Thunderhammers with Vulcan Histaan.
Okay let's see.
They get to reroll misses in shooting, 1 miss in close combat. Have a 3+ invulnerable, feel no pain. OIf course that is a 355 point unit.

I think this is what he is looking for. Command squads arent troop boxes, nor are the majority I have seen so far.
