Here's a quick (and iconoclastic) rundown of the Black Library's summer 2009 season, until such time as the 'proper' announcement goes up.

June 2009

Courage and Honour, by Graham McNeill. (Hardback) The fifth Ultramarines novel picks up where The Killing Ground left off. Now reunited with his battle-brothers on Ultramar, Uriel must prove that he is still worthy of his Chapter and his rank. When a massive tau invasion threatens Pavonis, Uriel gets his chance to prove his honour is still beyond reproach.

The Killing Ground, by Graham McNeill. The fourth Ultramarines novel, now available in paperback. Having escaped from their daemonic captors in the Eye of Terror, Uriel and Pasanius must now find their way home, to safety and redemption.

Reiksguard, by Richard Williams. First in the new Empire army series – novels that focus specifically on different aspects of the Empire's many armies. In this story, a Reiksguard knight faces the full horror of an orc invasion.

July 2009

Horus Heresy: Fallen Angels, by Mike Lee. Yes, he's better known for his work on Darkblade and Nagash, but Mike Lee is also a damn fine science fiction writer! You asked for a sequel to Descent of Angels, and here it is. Both on their homeworld and out on the Great Crusade, the Dark Angels are facing challenges. On Caliban, civil unrest flares into outright rebellion. Which cause is more important to the Calibanites and the Astartes - their own planet, or the Emperor? Out in space, Lion'el Jonson is tasked with bringing the Gehinnom star system under control. The forge worlds and hive worlds it comprises are vital to the Imperial war effort, in particular supplying and refitting Horus's own fleet. The military force necessary to bring this star system back into compliance tax even the Dark Angels' might - why is the primarch so determined to win, whatever the cost?

Heroes of the Space Marines, edited by Lindsey Priestley and Nick Kyme. Anthology of Warhammer 40,000 stories, all starring (as the title would suggest) Space Marines. Includes stories by Graham McNeill, Chris Roberson, Nick Kyme, Gav Thorpe, Steve Parker, Aaron Dembski Bowden, Richard Ford, Dylan Owen, Darren Cox and Peter Fehevari.

Gotrek & Felix: The Third Omnibus, by William King and Nathan Long. Omnibus edition containing Giantslayer, Orcslayer and Manslayer. Also includes the William King novella Redhand's Daughter.

August 2009

Emperor's Mercy, by Henry Zou. Debut Warhammer 40,000 novel by Henry Zou, starring Inquisitor Roth and his sidekick Bastiel Silverstein. This is an amazing book, beautifully written, full of action, and incredibly inventive. If you want a taster of Henry's writing, see the short story Voidsong in the anthology Planetkill.

Ravenor: The Omnibus, by Dan Abnett. Omnibus edition that collects all three of Dan's wonderful Ravenor stories: Ravenor, Ravenor Returned and Ravenor Rogue. Comes in an extremely sexy black and silver cover. Nothing but the best for Mr Abnett ;-)

Grey Seer, by CL Werner. First of a brand-new Gotrek & Felix spin-off series, starring the skaven grey seer Thanquol, who is surely everyone's favourite villain. Yes-yes!

September 2009

Salamander, by Nick Kyme. The very first novel about the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter, by Battle for Black Reach author, Nick Kyme. Introductory short story in Heroes of the Space Marines.

Time of Legends: Empire, by Graham McNeill. The supremely talented Mr McNeill continues the heroic story of Sigmar, started in Heldenhammer. A Chaos invasion threatens the lands of the Empire, testing the resolve of Sigmar and his chieftains to the limit.

Hoped for a sequel - now I'll get HH:Fallen Angels. Mike Lee's darkblade books are fine to me,good to hear he does the next DA book.

Will also look for Salamanders, simply to get finally a book with these "fiery" marines.

Target locked,ready to fire

While I am looking forward to it, not sure how many people were actually asking for it...

Anyway, thanks for the update!

I think its more like people asking for Descent of Angels to disappear and be replaced by a decent book.

While I dont think it sucked tremendously, it left a lot to be desired and couldve been stronger. I guess we will see how this one turns out.

life.

i read the nagash one. the writing was good. but nowhere in the army book is it stated ka-sabar was a nehekharan city, or that mahrak was the center of religion.

also , the mention of ushabti in the book confuses me. i thought ushabti were guardian statues, as stated in the army book, not living men given gifts by the gods?????

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

I read the Nagash book and loved it.

I wasn't asking for a sequal to Descent of angels (every one I know who read it absoultely hates it) but lets face it the sequel can't be any worse short of printing the same book in mirror writing.
BUT after reading Nagash, I'd say Mike Lee should pull it off.

I agree with what Gonads and lord marcus said. The Nagash book was a fairly interesting read, tho the ending was somewhat a dissappointment to me. I also read the Sigmar one, but its been quite a while. I remember that a bunch of people here on Dakka werent really fond of it. I thought it was ok though.

Yes, they are now, the events of the book explain why this would be impossible to continue. the title simply moved on, as the whole nature of the TK's changes no doubt with the passing of time and .. "interference " still to come from Nagash.

I really enjoyed HEldenhammer too. I gather it has been nominated for an award :

And if you’ll permit me a little moment of preening here, I’ve recently learned that my Time of Legends novel, Heldenhammer, has been nominated for the David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy. Which is fantastic news and a real honour. To be nominated for an award that bears the name of the man who inspired me to become a writer and whose influence has guided me over the years is simply awesome and I’m inordinately pleased by this. Voting on this award is done by a panel of judges and a reader judge who’ll be chosen on the website (http://gemmellaward.com) so keep an eye out for this. Voting runs from the 26th of December this year to March 09, but don’t worry, I’ll remind you all of this closer to the time! Looking at the competition, I don’t expect to win it, but maybe, just maybe, if all my friends out there join in and give me their support…

Hope he wins, he's a sound bloke.

And if the next few books he writes are half as Good as Mechanicum, which I'm only halfway through, then I'll be a very happy bunny indeed.

Dear Black Library

I am a Dark Angels player and I'm incredibly annoyed that, in Descent of Angels, the Dark Angels background has been fleshed out in a way that doesn't agree with the image I had of them in my own head. Although the book is well-written, I consequently hate you with every fibre of my being.

Next time you publish a book containing 'ancient history' fluff, could you please check with me first, so that you don't inadvertantly publish something that will force me to rethink anything.

PS. Legion was FINE by the way, no-one really liked Alpha Legion anyway...

I've never read the Ravenor series but the omnibus may get me into it.

As an aside GW has a black library section in their stores now.
About time too. The books are selling like hotcakes.

I think youll enjoy the series. I like it, thought it was great.

Legion is indeed ace.

I finished Mechancium this morning though and it surpasses that in enjoyment. The best HH book by far and indeed one of the best sci-fi books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

It's up there with Legion with regards to revelatory WTF moments too.

Does make me long for an Ad Mech/dark Admech army list though.

Is that a terminator behind the front two marines?
Nope looks like a dread (CCW and the exhaust pipes)- but he must be standing in a hole.

Also would you say their armour is boltgun metal rather than black?

Yes I would.

I'd also be most intrigued by the huge markings carved in the planetoid above them. Very South American looking initially no ?

Yeah, I figure they'll need to do a book on the Battle of Calth. That was the big one for the Ultramarines during the Heresy.
