Hey guys,
Who won? Who is going to Baltimore? Are there any 40K GT tickets left?
I placed second at Game Empire in Cali.

I got 2nd and my Buddy got 1st. I took the rather dirty Nidzilla. He took Chaos.
As to Baltimore, I am 50/50 on that.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.
|
I was playing WH/DH and I had 2 major victories and ended up on table #1 in round #3.
I ended up playing against a Dark Eldar player and lets say that there were a lot of shenanigans in my game.
At the end of the game I thought I was way behind in Kill points (my opponent said that he was up 18 to 13 kill points, and that sounded about right) so I ended up gambling at the last turn to try to take the 2 objectives and I failed to take either of them (my sisters rolled poorly for a difficult terrain test, and I attacked 4 DE warriors with 3 Stormtroopers and got beat down).
Then my opponent insisted that he got the massacre, and I insisted on counting up the kill points and I was up 18 KP to 17 KP giving him the major win. In hindsight I could have just shot him off an objective or just moved my stormtroopers to contest, and I would have gotten the minor victory and second place...grrrrr.
But knowing me, I might have tried the same thing again and gone for the massacre and the overall win.
Oh, and I was thinking about going to Baltimore, but I think I will pass this year. It is just to many $.

Epic Failure on my part. 1 20 point win, 1 1-point loss, and 1 13 point minor victory. :(
Took a 5-LR Daemonhunters army. Never tried that, thought it would be fun.
Round 1, almost tabled an ork horde. Killed everything except for a squad of bikes that I'd lured off to a far corner of the table while the rest of my force destroyed everything else he had.
Round 2, discovered that my stint as a Daemons player and using an outflanking Genestealer army has given me too much faith in reserve rolls. The only way to play a LR-Spam army is to go fully agressive. Instead, my LRs came on in drips and drabs, and my opponent displayed an uncanny ability to roll 6 for glancing hits.
Round 3, experienced some shenanigans like Blackmoor. Played against a slow-playing Ork player, who somehow managed to have 30 boys charge my LRs and maintain perfect spacing to minimize flamer hits. Also somehow managed to maintain perfect spacing while I tank-shocked mobs in an attempt to bunch them up. Also didn't quite understand the assault rules, and when I had a squad of grey knights attack two units simultaneously, countercharged so that every one of my models touched a bike. Bikes dead, warboss dead, and lootas run down. Spent about a ridiculous amount of time explaining how the assault rules worked, had a judge come over and explain how the assault rules work, and he still complained. Who also didn't read the mission rules, so that when the game was over, and I'd killed nearly everything except his troops, and was contesting my objective with a Land Raider, couldn't see how he'd lost when he held an objective.
Since I was out of the running, it wasn't worth the hassle of arguing.
Haven't decided whether I'm going to Baltimore. I've got a ticket, but not sure if I want to pay the travel expenses. I've got the free time...but I'm going to need to find work after Nov. 4th.

Massacred my first round mostly Nurgle chaos marine opponent. The mission really hurt him and it was pretty much just a shooting gallery for my Destroyers.
Tied my second round nearly all Nurgle chaos demon army. Despite not being able to wipe out even a single of his six units of Plague Bearers, I was able to pull out the tie. I had troops on two objectives, he had troops on three, but my unkillable Monolith was contesting one of those. Nurgle never dies!!!
Phased by my third round mostly Khorne chaos marine opponent. I spaced myself very nicely just outside the charge range of his marines, which unfortunately put me just inside the charge range of summoned lesser demons which I have never had to fight before. A lucky shot by just arrived Obliterators took out the Monolith so I was stuck in HtH and his three units of Berserkers just waltzed on in and sealed the deal. He went on to score second in the tourny.
There was controversy over who won third in the tourny. They gave the prize to a guy who had two wins and a tie over a guy who had two wins and a loss, despite the guy with the loss having point points than the other. They said it was supposed to be awarded on a win/loss ratio with all the points being only used for tie breakers. No one else had heard of that before.

@aduro-wow, thats the weirdest way to figure out who won a tournament I've ever heard.
Anyway I was the guy who got 3rd at time warp in new jersey playing a nidzilla army. so it was dark eldar in 1st, zilla 2nd, zilla 3rd. My one friend who was playing zilla lost round 3 to the dark eldar otherwise we would have had 3 nid players going to the finals.
I ran a rounded shooty big bug list with a good mix of venom cannons, barbed stranglers, and devourers. The other tyranid players commented about how venom cannons are useless now in 5th with the new rules for vehicle damage. I think I showed them when I played speed freeks round 2 and blew up 3 trukks and a battlewagon holding ghazkull turn 1.
Theres some nice shootin' tex!

They did exactly the opposite at legions in Pittsburgh. It was all battle points, with win/loss to break ties, so a gentlman with three decent wins got third over a tau player with 2 massacres and a massacre loss.
Blood Angels won at legions with a draw and two massacres (he took the draw early), and I took second with my mech Eldar.
My first opponent was another guy from Cleveland who came seperatly and from another store. He had mech Tau, and we went first, deploying two HQ teams, 2 rail heads and 2 broadsides and leaving the rest in basic reserve. I kept everything in reserve, and did not try to seize the initiative. I started out slowly, only knocking out a railgun in round two. I weathered his shooting, however, and took out both hammer heads on turn 3. He got a little cute and used the positional relay to only bring in one unit of kroot a turn for turns 2 and 3, which I think ended up hurting him in the long run. I got a squad of banshees ready to charge his broadsides when I rolled twos for my difficult, leaving them open to his entire armies shooting. After round 5, we rolled a one for another turn. Seeing us tied, we both agreed to play one more. I knocked out a fire warrior squad, he knocked out a DA squad, and we remained tied. Again agreeing to play one more, he managed to have a terrible round of shooting: failing to damage a fire prism from the rear with multiple war fish, not killing the last 5 DAs in one squad, and missing with his broadsides. Seizing the moment, I managed to wipe out a full HQ squad, a squad of kroot, and two crisis teams that were whittled down to grab a massacre. My opponent ended up losing the tie for third, so he ended up a little upset we kept playing. On the other hand, he scored a second round massacre against another player that lost big, so the final result could always be different. All told it was sporting of him to play a full game for a win, rather than accept a tie.
Round two was a nightmare for me. I ahve three scoring units, my opponent had six: two squads of plaguemarines and two of berzerkers. He also had a lord on juggernaut with demon weapon, a walking nurgle prince, a greater demon and a defiler. His two predators never once took damage and managed to knock down most of my skimmers, his plague marines enjoyed not only T5 and feel no pain, but my inability to role higher than a 1 on damage rolls. I played overly aggresivly and paid for it, and ended the game having only destoryed his defiler and a squad of plague marines, while I had my prisms (one immoble and one weaponless) and eldrad fighting the prince. My prisms, however, were all contesting objectives while he only held one outright. I scraped out a minor loss, and I felt better about that loss than many of my wins. By the way, the next person who tells me that holo fields, stones, and Vectored engines are wasted points on prisms will simply be wasting their time...
Still in sixth place, I jokingly said that I was in the realm of desperate optimism. "If I score a massacre, and the guys in the lead lose small, I can still place!" The third mission, of course, was combined kill points and capture and control, so I'd have to out KP orks, while holding two ojbectives to his none. I wish I could say I won by my own tactical acumen, but my opponent had clearly thrown in the towel after seeing my army and reading the mission. He had a pretty decent Ork list: mek with SAG, mek with KFF, three battlewagons, each with 20 boys (and the kff), two 30 man shoota mobs, 2 15 man loota squads, snikrot, and some grots to keep the SAG company. The key here was that his lootas started off the board. He was clearly tired and not playing his best, because he kept failing to get his boys into cover, and my prisms and DAs made short work of one mob and his lootas, whiel two squads of banshees wiped out his boys and the grots w/ Mek. meanwhile, he had put the the three wagons on the other flank to grab my objective, and they were simply ignored for three turns while I refused the flank. After his round 3, his only assets were his wagons on my flank, and I was able to boost a fortuned serpent with dragons between the wagons and the objective. Rather than agressivly piling out and charging the objective (perhaps for fear of my banshees/ DAs, he kept his boys in the wagons while trying to shoot the serpent. Passing 4 straight fortuned cover saves, the bird stayed up, while the dragons slagged a wagon and my skimmer fleet immobbilzed and stunned another. By the end of five, he had only only one wagon and it's boys left, and we didn't even bother rolling for another turn. With both objectives and 24-0 KP lead, I took the massacre.
All in all, I'd say it was all about luck and opponent draws. I know most of those guys, and I wouldn't say I was the second best player in the room, just the one with the second most points. While I profited from an opponent who basically wanted to throw in the towel in round three, I like to think that my refusal to give up in round two also turned a major loss or even massacre into a minor loss, and that was just as important to my placing.

Placed third here in Colorado, with my dual-lash Chaos. Massacred a DA player from Montana in the first round, then ran into a mech-Sisters player from here in Colorado (who eventually took second). I just couldn't do enough damage in that game to keep him from getting to objectives, while his Faith was extremely useful at getting rid of my PMs and NMs - resulted in a major loss for me. Last round was against a Nid player from Texas with lots of souped-up gaunts - between firepower whittling him down, gaunts bouncing off plague marines, and my Lashes keeping his heavy hitters away, the result was another massacre in my favor.
I took 3rd with 49 points, then the mech-sisters player in second and a Blood Angels player took first. I won't be going to Baltimore, though, as I will be at a geophysics conference in Las Vegas that week. So the guy who finished 4th playing Eldar, a friend of mine, will be going in my stead. He placed 3rd overall at the Ard Boyz finals last year, so we'll see how he does this year. We're hoping for a repeat.

I see your point, and it's an arguable one. We basically realized we had an hour and a half left and a very unresolved game on the table. Ironically, the person hurt most by our decision was my opponent, who was narrowly edged out of third. With even the 10 points from a draw, plus his two other massacres, he would have won the whole thing. The over-all nature of the event was pretty easy going, a couple of people dropped after the first two rounds, the third opponent of the overall champ resigned halfway through giving him the big win (24 points), and as despite there being some serious money on the table, pretty much everybody was having a good time.
The other thing to keep in mind is that our turnout was only 18 people, meaning a tie didn't eliminate you. The winner had a draw, and I even took a minor loss. At even a 24 man even, the required points goes up pretty dramatically, and I'm guessing by the finals even a minor win in round one essentially eliminates you from the running.

I don't know about the 3rd/4th debacle but the drop pod issue is pretty rediculous - most of the people saying "Well just suck it up and change your list, like I had to do" probably didn't make any actual list alterations and were just never planning on using drop pods anyway.

Re: scoring. The store should have admitted that it made a mistake and offered $40 in product to the fourth place finisher. Since the third place finisher already gave his finals spot to the fourth place guy, that would have solved the problem. The store would be out $40, but that's not much to pay to fix their own screw-up.
Re: drop pods. I agree with your post in that thread. There is a dp model now, but it's brand new, and you have to allow a grace period for players to purchase, assemble and paint them.

Any official event is pretty explicit about using GW models only. Forgeworld pods have been available as long as the rules for pods themselves. Of course they're expensive, even more so than regular GW kits, but NOBODY forces a player to pick this army. I'm not gonna cry foul if someone doesn't have grenades modeled, but anything beyond that should certainly be modeled or I'll make an issue of it. I've seen off brand and scratchbuilt pods that abused the footprint and height of the standard GW model, and the players actually have the gall to argue LOS and 1" minimum distance.
If I'm playing a fun game at my game store and a person wants to try using cups for pods, to see if he likes the build, I'm fine with that. When a person shows up at an Ard Boyz event or Rogue Trader without a properly modeled army, he shouldn't be playing. Buy and build the models, borrow the models, or use a different army, or just stay home.

Clobbered. Played a finalist from last year named Dominic in the first round. My Mech Eldar against his Dante/Corbulo Blood Angels. Fought to a draw in the KP mission. The next two missions saw me play the only two Sister of Battle armies in the tournament. I got tarpitted both times and managed a minor win and a major, which put me in seventh place. Ah well...
Did any of you guys play the ork guy who won? I heard he was running 45 lootas. Is that as heinous as it sounds?
Several of us Hellfish are going to a Columbus RTT this saturday for some less driven games. The prize is nice though, a scratchbuilt reaver titan!
Congrats to you Greg, kick some butt at the finals!

If more of us valued food and cheer and 40K over hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. |

The 45 Lootas was brutal. I watched from a distance while he ripped his opponents open like a gutted fish.
It was sick. As far as the day goes, I played a Guard army that was pretty close till the end of it. Once the judge called 35 minutes, all of a sudden, he couldn't remember rules, movement, where his units were, what they had.....basically he turned what should have been a 10 minute round into a 33 minute round. If I had known that this was going to happen, I would have called it and said enough. Second was against an Ork horde that was bigger than mine(I-172, him-212). Wiped him out piece-meal, including running over his Boss with a battlewagon. Poor guy, he came in dead last. He had a blast with it too! Third was the guy from Toledo that took second overall in the finals in '07. He played Demons. Solid list, brutal as all get out too. Popped him to a standstill. If we had gone another round, I most likely would have ended up losing it. If he could have killed off my Dred(four rounds, and no good) with his Bloodthirster......So a Loss, a Win and a Tie. I think I came in 12th, or so.

I pulled out 3rd place in jersey with nidzilla. We also pulled out 2nd but lost the top spot to dark eldar, otherwise 3 nidzillas would have come out of here.
Greg-Nice job making it to the finals. You might not remember but I'm justin from chicago, we met at the awards ceremony. Have you tried/seen the dual lash plague marine army in action in ardboyz? I proxied it with some success, but massed genestealers (like 50+) still gives me trouble.

They gave the prize to a guy who had two wins and a tie over a guy who had two wins and a loss, despite the guy with the loss having point points than the other. This may be against my better judgment... But I'm really curious for people here to weigh in on their opinions of the goings on. The forums for the store are pretty slow and only have a few people posting a day. Link to the relevant thread, with the main discussion in question starting after the final scores posted half way down the page;

edit: And I'll add this... Post here, not there. I'm not trying to flood their forums with other people.
Store messed up. GW shouldn't be backing them.
I've seen the Troop Landers, they don't seem that much bigger footprint wise than the FW pods, taller sure, but it's not something I'd personally fuss over.

Kirby - no, I did not have a chance to play Scott (also from Toledo). Sorry to hear you didn't make it. If anything, I look forward to seeing you guys possibly at Bashcon and definitely at AdeptiCon. How many teams are you bringing this year? You may be able to go for a record.
Justin - Good job yourself on qualifying. I played against double lash princes, 6 units of plaque marines in rhinos and 9 obliterators in the last round. It was a tough match, but I was able to take both objectives and nearly tabled the army. It's definitely a strong force and one that should not be underestimated. The detriment to it is limited long range fire power. Sometimes that can force your hand into doing things that you don't want to do.
